COTE St. LUC, Que --
Robert Sedin used both his arm and his bat, leading McGill to a 2-1 victory over the Université de Montréal, Saturday, to give the Redmen a two-game doubleheader sweep in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association Northern Division best-of-three semifinals at Gary Carter Field. McGill won the opener 5-3.
The sweep assured the defending national champs of a berth at the CCBA championship, a six-team tournament in Fredericton, N.B., Oct. 22-25.
Sedin tossed a complete game, three-hitter, allowing no earned runs in seven innings, walking four and striking out three. He threw 95 pitches, 59 for strikes and worked his way out of three tough spots, including a challenging sixth inning. Sedin also had a hot bat from the leadoff position, going 2-for-2 and knocking in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. He singled in the first and third innings.
McGill produced all of their offence with a two-run fifth inning.
James Pavelick reach base on an error and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by
Joe Enea. With two runners on, they each advanced on a sacrifice by
Emerson Dohm. An RBI single by
Alexander Levis cashed in the first run, followed by Sedin's sac fly to make it 2-0.
Montréal loaded the bases in the sixth but could only muster an unearned run on a two-out error by catcher
Sam Groleau. Sedin put out the fire when he induced
Xavier Bernet to ground out to the mound.
UdeM starter
Simon Brisebois was saddled with the loss despite a solid outing, striking out six batters, walking just one and allowing two runs.
McGill now awaits the winner of the other semifinal between second-place Concordia and third-place Carleton. Concordia won Game 1 on Saturday by a 5-1 score but the Ravens roared back with an 11-5 victory in the second half of the doubleheader. The deciding contest is scheduled for Sunday at noon in Ottawa.
Before the next round of playoffs, McGill is scheduled to play an exhibition game on Oct. 13 at 7:30 pm. against College Lafleche at Stade Fernand-Bedard in Trois Rivieres, Que.
The CCBA Northern Division best-of-three final series is scheduled to open with a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 17 beginning at 12 noon. If a deciding game is needed, it is slated for Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. All games will be played at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park.
