Welence wonderful as baseball boys wrangle Ravens, remain undefeated

OTTAWA -- Tyler Welence, a third-year shortstop from Ridgewood, N.J., had a monster weekend as the McGill University men's baseball club swept a doubleheader for the second time in as many day. the Redmen cruised to a 12-2 and 9-1 victories over the Carleton Ravens at Kinsmen Field, Sunday.

Pitcher Ryan Kramer, a first-year transfer from Dickinson College and a native of New Vernon, N.J., collected the win in the first game. Tim Jones of Lake Jackson, Tx., and a first-year transfer from Texas A&M, was the pitcher of record in the nightcap.

McGill leads the newly-organized Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association's Northern Division with an unblemished record to 4-0, after opened their regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Welence, a 22-year-old junior in bio-resource engineering, went 9-for-13 at the plate over the four games, registering a .733 on-base percentage with a stellar .692 batting average. The six-foot, 180-pound middle infielder amassed eight runs batted in, three doubles, a pair of walks and scored five runs.

McGill (4-0) will host their cross-town rival Montreal Carabins (0-0) in the team's home opener on Sept. 10 (7:30 pm) at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc.
