Box Score CANTON, NY -- McGill exploded for four third-period goals to spoil the St. Lawrence University Saints women's hockey team's home opener en route to a 7-4 victory in preseason play at in Appleton Arena, Wednesday.
Seniors
Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno, Que., and
Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., paced the Martlets attack with two goals apiece.
It was McGill's second straight win over SLU, after losing the first nine confrontations since their inaugural rendez-vous in 2001. The Martlets improved to 37-50-7 in 94 lifetime meetings against NCAA squads since 1997, including a 4-4 record against American opponents last year.
The seven-goal outburst equaled McGill's second-best offensive display ever against an NCAA program, only bettered by a 10-0 whitewash over RPI on Jan. 30, 1999.
"I really liked the seven goals," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith in a bit of an understatement. "Offensively we were real good but there are still some things in our own end that we need to sort out but it was a good game for us against a good team. We certainly played hard and I thought that our speed really came to the forefront. We play these games (against NCAA teams) to get better and that game will make us better."
McGill opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period on markers by
Olivia Sutter (3:01) of Red Deer, Alta., and Clement-Heydra (14:59). In the second frame, Saints junior
Kailee Heidersbach cut the lead in half when she directed a pass from senior
Kayla Raniwsky behind Martlet goaltender
Taylor Hough with just over five minutes to play. Less than 30 seconds later, however, Oles pushed the McGill lead back to two and the Martlets took a 3-1 lead heading into the third.
The teams then combined for seven goals in a wild third period, including four within a two-minute span.
SLU senior
Jessica Hon opened the third period onslaught at 1:48 with a breakaway goal but McGill countered with the next three -- by defenceman
Michelle Daigneault, forward
Pamela Psihogios and Oles -- to put the game out of reach at 6-2.
For the red-hot Oles, it was her seventh goal in five games and improved her lifetime record to 120-122-242 in 165 McGill games overall.
Kennedy Marchment and McClure scored back-to-back markers 74 seconds apart midway through the final period to make it 6-4, but just eight seconds later, at 11:56, Clement-Heydra potted her second of the contest to finish the soiree with three points.
Hough stonewalled SLU the rest of the way. The McGill junior from Toronto turned aside 35 of the Saints 39 shots to earn the victory, improving to 2-1 in the preseason.
"I though that Hough was terrific in our net and kept us in the game, especially in the second period, where we didn't play very well," noted Smith.
The official stats had SLU with a 39-17 edge in shots -- including an 18-3 margin in the second period -- although the McGill coaches had the final tally at 29-21.
Giulia Mazzocchi started the game in goal for St. Lawrence, and was beaten twice on six shots. Junior
Mikaela Thompson played the middle stanza and conceded one goal on four shots. Rookie
Brooke Wolejko played the final period and coughed up four goals on eight shots.
McGill continues on with their second of eight exhibition contests against NCAA programs when they play at Vermont on Friday, Sept. 26 in a 7 p.m. puck drop.
The Saints will host defending national champion Clarkson for a non-conference matchup on Oct. 3.
