Gaels eke out OT win over McGill, snap 8-game losing skid to hockey Martlets

Box Score
KINGSTON, Ont. -- Fiona Lester of Peterborough, Ont., scored at 2:32 of sudden-death overtime as Queen's skated to a 3-2 victory over McGill on Day 2 of the Queen's Invitational women's preseason hockey tournament, Saturday.

It was the Gaels first win over McGill since a 4-3 decision on Oct. 1, 2005 in Kingston, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the defending CIS national champs, who own a 12-6-1 record in 19 meetings between the rivals since 1997, when the CIS initiated a national championship in women's hockey.

McGill opened the scoring on the power play goal when sniper Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., tallied her fourth marker in three preseason contests at 14:40 of the first period. But Queen's responded just 78 seconds later when Taryn Pilon of Peterborough, Ont., struck a power-play tally to knot the score 1-1.

Courtenay Jacklin of Regina gave the Gaels a 2-1 lead at 8:46 of the second period but McGill's Pamela Psihogios, a junior from Laval, Que., then forced overtime after finding the back of the net at 15:45 of the third stanza.

The Martlets had a 36-26 edge in shots but goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen of Sharon, Ont., made 34 saves to collect the win in goal for Queen's. Her McGill counterpart, Taylor Hough,  a junior from Toronto, made 23 saves and took the loss.

The Martlets, who dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the tournament, will faceoff against Wilfrid Laurier on Sunday at 12 noon. McGill is 10-5-0 lifetime against the Golden Hawks and have won eight straight meetings since a 4-1 loss to WLU on March 11, 2006.

The Gaels (2-0) can win their own tourney if they defeat the Montreal Carabins (1-1) at 3:30 pm in the finale.
