Oles scores lots of goals as hockey Martlets outlast 'Hawks in shootout thriller

Box Score
KINGSTON, Ont. -- Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., collected six points, including a hat-trick, then added the winning tally in a post-overtime shootout as McGill outlasted the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 7-6 in a wild, preseason women's hockey game at the Queen's Invitational tournament, Sunday.

McGill, which led 3-0 after the opening period and 5-2 after two, conceded four goals in the final frame and watched in horror as WLU rallied for three markers in the final five minutes and 31 seconds to force overtime at 6-6.

Oles, a fifth-year physical education senior, who was the only player to score in the shootout, earned points on all six of McGill's goals scored in regulation time, which gave the Martlets 1-0, 4-1 and 5-2 leads.

"Holy smokes she was flying out there," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, of Oles, who has already potted five goals and nine points in just four exhibition contests. "She was great on both sides of the puck, in all three zones, she was real good."

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was freshman Alexandria Serpico (1-2-3) and senior Stefanie Pohlod, both natives of Calgary, along with junior Gabrielle Davidson (1-1-2) of Pte. Claire, Que.

The Martlets had a 41-33 edge in shots and went 3-for-6 on the power-play, while Laurier connected on two of five opportunities.

"It was a little sloppy in the third there," admitted Smith, whose troops went to overtime in all three tourney games, defeating Montreal 3-2 on Friday and losing 3-2 to Queen's on Saturday. "We stuck with the game plan for 40 minutes, then kind of abandoned it in the third. We were up by a few goals going into the third and were a little too relaxed on the bench and on the ice. We kind of got away from our structured game plan. That said, it was a great weekend for us with three real competitive games."

Six different marksmen replied for the 'Hawks, including Jessica Prevette, Montana Merante, Robyn Degagne, Dollee Meigs, Megan Howe and Laura Brooker, who tied the game at 19:12 of the third period with an extra attacker on the ice.

McGill goalkeeper Brittany Smrke, a sophomore from Oakville, saved 27 of 33 shots for the win, in addition to halting all three attempts in the shootout. Amanda Smith took the loss for Laurier, conceding six goals on 40 shots.

The Martlets improved to 3-1 in preseason play, will now begin the NCAA portion of their challenging non-conference schedule. They are slated to play on the road at St. Lawrence (Sept. 24), Vermont (Sept. 26), Princeton (Oct. 11), Yale (Oct. 12), Harvard (Oct. 17) and Dartmouth (Oct. 18). The only break in that prolonged road trip will be the annual home game against the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, on Oct. 4. The Martlets will also confront two other NCAA squads next semester, at Cornell (Jan. 2) and at Clarkson (Jan. 3).

MARTLET MURMURS: Aside from being without Olympian Melodie Daoust, who is recovering from summer knee surgey, the Martlets had to make do without sniper Katia Clement-Heydra, the CIS player of the year last season, who was shaken up in a collision along the boards in front of the Queen's bench on Saturday's.
