AHUNTSIC, Que. --
Samuel Groleau went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, a home run, four RBIs and scored three runs as the Universite de Montreal jumped out to an early lead on visiting McGill and cruised to an easy 11-2 victory in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association action, Wednesday, at Parc Ahuntsic.
It was McGill's second loss in as many games -- both to the Montreal club -- after starting the season with an eight-game win streak. Montreal had a 12-8 edge in hits.
Five runs over the first three innings allowed Montreal to put the game away early. An RBI single by Groleau and a sacrifice fly by
Vincent Ally during the first inning was followed by Groleau's three-run homer in the second inning. They added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth and led 10-0 before the Redmen finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when teammates
Jamie Fuoco and
James Vardy each delivered RBI singles.
Steven Rintoul was one of seven Redmen players to register a hit, leading the McGill offence with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Montreal starter
Simon Brisebois collected the win. He allowed two runs over six innings, struck out five, walked one and gave up eight hits. Redmen starter
Adriano Petrangelo took the loss, allowing nine hits and six earned runs in three innings. He walked none and struck out three.
McGill (8-2), which still leads the CCBA Northern Division by two games over Concordia, will get a chance for revenge against third-place Montreal (3-3), when they meet next on Sept. 19 at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc (7:30 p.m.). After that, the Redmen will head down to Troy, N.Y., to take on the NCAA's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers in a non-conference doubleheader, Sept. 20.
