McGill to play Windsor in 103rd edition of Queen's Cup championship, Saturday

WINDSOR, Ont. -- A 28-game regular season followed by three grueling playoff series has come to a head as the top team from the OUA East meets the best from OUA West in a battle for the 103rd Queen's Cup, presented by ArcelorMittal Dofasco. The Windsor Lancers and McGill Redmen will battle at the South Windsor Arena on Saturday (Mar. 15) with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m.

The game is slated to be webcast with live stats also available online.

Meanwhile, in the nation's capital, Carleton will host Lakehead on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the OUA bronze medal game on SSN, with the winner earning the conference's wildcard berth the to CIS University Cup championship in Saskatoon, March 20-23.

Though recent Queen's Cup history would appear to give McGill an advantage, the Lancers will enter the OUA title game with something to prove. The Redmen have won four of the last six Queen's Cup titles and Windsor will be looking to claim their second Cup in school history and the first since 1998.

The McGill Redmen completed the regular season in third place in the OUA East. They entered the playoffs as winners of nine of their final 10 regular season games. In the opening round of the postseason, the Redmen swept the Concordia Stingers, outscoring their cross-town rivals 11-4 in two games. The veteran squad then swept their semifinal series against the defending Queen's Cup champions UQTR outscoring the Patriotes 8-4 to earn an OUA East final match-up with the first-place Carleton Ravens.

The Redmen opened the East final with a 5-2 loss at Carleton after they surrendered an early 2-0 lead. McGill bounced back to earn 3-2 and 2-1 wins to punch their ticket to the Queen's Cup while earning an automatic berth to the CIS championship in Saskatoon.

The success of the Redmen revolves around Ryan McKiernan of White Plains, N.Y., -- the top defenceman in the OUA East -- and electric forward Cedric McNicoll of Thetford Mines, Que. McKiernan led all CIS rearguard with a team-high 37 points on the season, collecting 13 goals and 24 assists. McNicoll paced the team with 15 goals on the year.

The Windsor Lancers posted a regular season record of 17-11-0 and finished fourth in the OUA West. Though they stumbled slightly to close the regular season, going 6-4 in their final 10 games, Windsor peaked at the right time. They opened the quarter-finals with a sweep of fifth-place Toronto to set up a semifinal meeting with division-leading Western. The Lancers dropped Game 1 to Western but roared back to win the series with back-to-back 3-1 scores.

In the OUA West final series, Windsor locked horns with the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The Lancers kicked it into high gear posting 7-1 and 6-2 victories to sweep Lakehead and earn the right to play for the Queen's Cup.

Captain Drew Palmer of Tecumseh, Ont., and third-year forward Spencer Pommells of Grand Prairie, Alta., were the top scorers for the Lancers during the regular season. Pommells led the team in goals, assists and points (13-19-32) while Palmer added eight goals and 17 helpers to finish behind Pommells in points.

McGill and Windsor met twice during the regular season. Windsor visited Montreal for games on January 31 and February 1. The Lancers claimed a 4-3 overtime shootout win in their first meeting, but McGill rebound to claim a 6-2 victory in the second contest.
