QUEBEC CITY-- Dianna Ros scored a game-high 15 points and Mariam Sylla added 11 as the No.3-ranked McGill women's basketball team waltzed to a 60-46 road victory over No.9-ranked Laval at the Centre PEPS, Friday.
McGill, which improved their unblemished record to 4-0, has now won 13 of their last 14 contests against RSEQ opponents, dating back to last year. The result marked the Martlets 14th straight conquest over their provincial rivals, since a 74-68 setback in Montreal on Nov. 12, 2011. It was also the team's seventh straight decision over a CIS opponent this season.
Ros, a 5-foot-7 senior guard from Montreal, shot an impressive 6-for-12 from the field, including a 2-for-4 performance from downtown. She also went 1-for-1 from the foul-line and added three assists, three steals and one rebound.
Sylla, a third-year forward from Guinea, struggled from the floor making only two of seven attempts but made up for it with a strong 7-for-8 effort from the free-throw line. She also pulled down eight rebounds to go along with a pair of assists, two steals and one block.
Laval led for the first four minutes early on but never saw the lead again after a Gabriela Hebert bucket at the 6:12 mark gave McGill their first lead at 12-11. The Martlets increased that to 19-14 after the opening quarter and extended that to 32-25 at the half but the home team reduced the gap to a 42-39 advantage after three stanzas before McGill extinguished the Laval comeback with an 18-7 edge in the final quarter.
Gabrielle Girard and Justine Guay-Bilod were the only Rouge et Or players to reach double figures scoring with 15 and 12, respectively.
The Martlets had a 35-28 advantage in rebounds, a 13-11 edge in steals and a 4-1 difference in blocks.
It was ugly game in terms of turnovers as the Martlets coughed it up a season high 32 times. Laval didn't do much better protecting the ball, making 30 miscues of their own.
McGill shot 38.5 per cent from the field (20/52), went 2-for-10 from the arc and sank an impressive 18 of 20 from the line (90%). Laval shot a paltry 17 per cent from the floor (9/53), went 4-for-19 from beyond the arc and made 24 of 30 attempts from the line.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Alex Kiss-Rusk (10 pts), Gabriela Hebert (7), Jennifer Silver (6), Carolann Cloutier (4), Stephanie Blais (3), Marika Guerin (2) and Marie-Love Michel (2).
The Martlets (4-0) sit alone on top of the RSEQ standings and are off for the December exam break until traveling to Windsor for the Lancer Holiday Classic, Dec. 28-30 where they play Calgary, Western and Windsor, respectively. Laval (2-2) will also play over the holidays, battling Algoma, Nipissing and College de Sainte-Foy, Dec. 28-30.
