Stingers outlast rugby Redmen in double overtime to claim conference crown

MONTREAL -- Winger Philippe Bibeau scored the winning try with six minutes left in a second overtime period to give Concordia a 28-21 victory over McGill in the RSEQ men's rugby championship game before more than 500 at Concordia Stadium, on a foggy Sunday afternoon.

It snapped McGill's reign of eight consecutive Quebec league titles and was the first banner for the Stingers since 2005 when they defeated the Redmen 20-18.

Concordia took a 9-3 lead on three penalty goals by Joey Fulginiti, the RSEQ conference scoring leader.

Thomas Stokes tallied 11 points, with three tries and a conversion on Usman Naqvi's try to give the Redmen a 16-9 lead.

As the clock wound down, it appeared that the Redmen were about to win their ninth straight Quebec conference title. But the Stingers tied the score at 16-16 on the final play of regulation time with Graeme McClintock scoring a try and Fulginiti hitting the convert to force two 10-minute overtime periods.

"I came out of the press box to shake the hands of the opposing coaches and I ended up having to turn around and go back up there for the overtime," confessed Concordia head coach Clive Gibson to the media.

Fullback Caleb Jordan scored an unconverted try in the first extra session to give the Stingers a 21-16 advantage, but McGill answered with a try from Joseph Sassie to knot the score at 21-21.

Late in the second overtime, a blocked McGill kick was returned all the way back to McGill's end zone by Bibeau to give the Stingers the victory.

Naqvi was selected as McGill's man of the match, while Andreas Krawczyk earned similar honours for Concordia.

The Redmen finished with a 5-4-2 record overall, including a 4-2-2 third-place finish in the RSEQ standings. Players who dressed for their final game in a McGill jersey include Kylan Gibbs, Estello Hill, Usman Naqvi, Marc Webster, Rob Ashe, Quentin Pradere, Tom Lamothe, Joe Sassi, Stein Erickson and Theo Roussely.  Injured players also expected to graduate include Humza Turab, Spencer Paveck, Konstantin Born, Ryan White and Eric Wiebe.
