MONTREAL --
Usman Naqvi, a senior flanker from Dubai, scored two of McGill's five tries as the Redmen handily defeated last-place Sherbrooke 29-12 in men's university rugby action at Molson Stadium, Wednesday.
The five majors gave McGill (4-1-2) a key bonus point in the RSEQ standings for the fourth time this season as the Redmen moved from third to first in one fell swoop. They now have 24 points, three ahead of both Bishop's (4-1-1) and Concordia (4-2-1), heading into the final week of the RSEQ schedule.
Other try scorers for the Redmen were
Graham Cunningham of Pointe Claire, Que.,
James Wilson of London (England) and
Joseph Rossi, who was selected man of the match for his side. Rounding out the McGill scoring was
Thomas Stokes of Vancouver, B.C., with a pair of conversions.
For the Vert & Or, which completed the regular season at 1-7-0,
Pierre-Nicolas Perron scored one try, as did
Simon Picard, who was picked as his team's player of the game. Their other points were scored off the foot of
Jean-François Varin, who went 1-for-2 on his conversion attempts.
Two yellow warning cards were issued in the contest, with
James Wilson getting flagged for McGill and
Ibrahima Seyes taking one for Sherbrooke.
The Redmen have one game remaining before playoffs but could finish anywhere among the top three spots. They close out their schedule with a crucial matchup at Bishop's on Nov. 7 in a game that is scheduled to be webcast on
Gaiters TV.
