COTE ST. LUC, Que — They say that revenge is sweet and it took the McGill University baseball team six years to taste victory over the UNB Cougars. Sophomore Adriano Petrangelo of Montreal, Que., pitched a complete game shutout Friday afternoon at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Park, propelling the Redmen to an 8-0 whitewash over UNB in their opening match at the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championship.

This was the first meeting between UNB and the Redmen since the old Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association gold medal final on Oct. 19, 2008, won 5-3 by the maritime-based squad at Trudeau Park.

Petrangelo, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound righthander, racked up eight strikes over seven innings, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks. In addition to his flawless effort on the mound, the second-year anatomy major also received great run support from McGill's bats.

Redmen shortstop Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J., and third-baseman Robert Sedin of Sunnyvale, Calif., each drove in a run to open up a 2-0 McGill lead in the first. Sedin went 2-for-4 on the afternoon, with one run scored.

McGill came out swinging in the third and fourth innings, adding three runs in each frame to extend the lead to eight. Satcher Steven Rintoul, who led the team with a pair of RBIs, got the ball rolling with a two-run double that scored Jamie Fuoco and Zachary Aaron.

Outfielders Alexander Levis and Rocky Hroch and first-baseman James Vardy also each chipped in an RBI.

New Brunswick starting pitcher Adam Kerr gave up five earned runs on six hits and three walks in just three innings of work, taking the loss for the Cougars.

UNB (1-1) will next play a Saturday morning matchup against Concordia (2-0) at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, McGill (1-0) takes on Saint Mary's (0-1) in the second game of a Friday night doubleheader slated for 8 p.m.
