Wunderkind Welence wins it in thrilla at McGilla

Shortstop Tyler Welence

COTE ST. LUC, Que. -- Shortstop Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J., collected three hits and a pair of RBIs, including the winning run in McGill's last at bat as the Redmen edged Concordia 3-2 in a baseball thriller at Gary Carter Field, Thursday.

It was the team's third walk-off victory in the past four games and evened their season series with Concordia at 2-2 with one confrontation remaining.

The game was tied 2-2 in bottom of the seventh when Montrealer James Vardy led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and pitcher Tim Jones of Lake Jackson, Texas, was intentionally walked. Then Alexander Levis of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., dropped a bunt single to load the bases, setting the stage for Welence's walk-off single. It capped off a 3-for-4 performance at the plate for the bio-resource engineering junior, who smacked a pair of doubles in the contest.

Jones needed only four pitches to collect the win in relief, surrendering no hits, no walks and striking out one in a third of an inning. Redmen starter Adriano Petrangelo scattered four hits in five innings of work. He allowed one earned run, struck out two and walked a pair.

McGill took an early 2-0 lead, in the bottom of the first. An RBI double by Welence cashed in Levis to start the inning off, then Welence scored. The Stingers fought their way back, scoring a run in the third inning and one in the fifth to tie it at 2-2.

For Concordia, Andre Lagarde was 2-for-4 with an RBI and starting pitcher Roberto Zapata tossed a complete game seven-hitter, allowing two earned runs while striking out five and walking three.

The victory all but clinched the CCBA Northern Division pennant for McGill, which owns a 12-4 record with three games remaining before playoffs. Their magic number is two to clinch their third regular season pennant in five years. Any combination of McGill victories or Concordia losses equaling two will do the trick for the Redmen, who will host third-place Carleton (8-7) in a doubleheader on Sunday at noon. McGill then closes our their regular-season by hosting Concordia on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Concordia (10-7), which also has three contests remaining, plays the University of Montreal (7-7) in a doubleheader on Oct. 5 before the season finale against McGill.
