COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Ryan Kramer of New Vernon, N.J., struck out 12 in a stellar pitching performance as McGill blanked visiting Carleton 3-0 to open the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Assoication Northern Division playoffs, Saturday, in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau.Park.

The Redmen parlayed two Carleton errors into a pair of first inning runs and never looked back. The added an extra insurance run on another miscue in the second and the three-run cushion was never in doubt with Kramer on the mound.

The 22-year-old right-hander, who tranferred to McGill this year from the NCAA's Dickinson College, tossed a complete-game gem that required 100 pitches. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander scattered three hits and walked just one in a seven-inning shutout.

Montrealer James Vardy, a first-baseman who was hitting from the ninth-spot in the batting order, led the Redmen offensively with a 2-for-2 performance and a run scored.

Carleton starter Charlie Crabb pitched a complete game as well and was saddled with the loss, despite a solid outing of his own. He allowed no earned runs and six hits over six innings, walked none, struck out none.

McGill can wrap up the semifinal series with a victory in the nightcap on Saturday at 3 p.m.
