MONTREAL-
Katia Clement-Heydra scored the game-winner and
Andrea Weckman posted a 22-save shutout as
No.1-ranked McGill blanked the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-0 at McConnell Arena, Friday night.
The victory extended McGill's win streak to 40 consecutive games against CIS opponents as the Martlets improved to regular season mark to 14-0 atop the RSEQ standings. Their last loss in Quebec league play was a 4-3 setback in a post-overtime shootout, on home-ice to Carleton, Oct. 29, 2011.
"When we play against Ottawa, they always play a physical kind of game," said
Peter Smith, who improved to 384, 134-31 in 549 career games behind the McGill bench. "We played a gritty, disciplined game today. That was one of the things that we wanted to focus after taking a lot of penalties against them last week. We worked hard, crashed the net, got out of there quickly and didn't take many penalties. We didn't give up too many scoring chances and got good goaltending from Andrea who really deserved the shutout."
Weckman, a native of Kitchener, Ont., earned her fourth goose-egg in eight regular season starts. The fifth-year neuroscience senior improved to 8-0 on the campaign and 23-0 lifetime in league play.
Clement-Heydra, an industrial relations senior from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., hit three goal-posts in the game and finally snapped a scoreless affair on the power-play at 8:03 of the second period. She converted a pass from
Chelsey Saunders for what proved to be her fourth game-winner of the season and now leads the RSEQ scoring race with 10-19-29 in only 14 contests.Clement-Heydra needs six more goals to become the fourth player in McGill history to reach the century mark.
Stefanie Pohlod, who hails from Calgary, gave the Martlets some breathing room with an insurance marker midway through the final period. Defencemen
Emily Davies and
Elizabeth Hillier drew assists on the play.
The Martlets, who had a 35-22 edge in shots on net, went 1-for-6 on the power-play and erased all four shorthanded situations.
McGill improved to 77-12-7 lifetime against the Gee-Gees, including a 37-game win streak in regular-season play since a 2-1 setback in Ottawa on Feb. 7, 2007.
With six games remaining before playoffs, the division-leading Martlets (14-0) will host fourth-place Concordia (4-10) on Sunday (Jan. 26) at 3 p.m. Thus far, McGill has swept their two meetings this season, 5-1 and 4-2, both at home.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill senior
Leslie Oles sat out her one-game suspension incurred as a result of a game-misconduct penalty assesed in the team's previous game. Oles, who is currently tied for second in the RSEQ scoring race with 25 points in 13 contests, quietly became the team's all-time penalty king last week with 224 career PIMs in 146 games overall. She surpassed the 209 minutes amassed by Vanessa Davidson in 203 games between 2005 and 2010.
