COTE ST. LUC, Que. --
Casey Auerbach of Westmount, Que., and
Channing Arndt of Yarmouth, Me., each had two hits, scored once and knocked in a pair of runs as the McGill Redmen salvaged a doubleheader split in their 2013 collegiate baseball season opener against Concordia, at Gary Carter Field, Sunday.
The dynamic duo sparked a six-run outburst in the fifth inning as McGill outlasted the Stingers 9-6. Concordia won the opener 5-2.
In the nightcap, McGill took a 3-0 lead in the third ining but Concordia rallied for four runs in the fourth, setting the stage for the wild come-from-behind heroics that featured everything but the kitchen sink.
Catcher
Joel Ross pf Rothesay, N.B., sparked the rally, drawing a one-out walk. He advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches, then strolld home to tie the score at 4-4 on Auerbach's RBI single. Adam Gorden of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., then reached first on an error and Auerbach scored the go-ahead run on
Jamie Fuoco's RBI single.
Alexander Levis reached base on an error that allowed Gordon to score. Brother Josh Gordon walked, followed by consecutive RBI singles from
Tyler Welence, Arndt and
Adam Manis.
Justin Hii collected the win in relief of starter
Simon Ehrmantraut. Zach Aaron mopped up and collected the save.
McGill (1-1), will host the Montreal Carabins on Monday night, then will play Concordia on Wednesday. Both games are slated to start at 7:30 p.m. The carabins are an expansion team in the six-team Northern Conference of the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association.
