Fuoco caps Redmen rally to salvage doubleheader split against Ravens

Jamie Fuoco

OTTAWA – Infielder Jamie Fuoco reached based four times, scored twice and had two runs batted in as McGill rallied from a 4-1 deficit and outlasted Carleton 8-7 to salvage a doubleheader split in Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association action, Sunday.

The Ravens edged McGill 3-2 in the opener.

The nightcap marked yet another of the team's patented come-from-behind victories over the past few seasons. Trailing 4-1 in the third inning, the Redmen scored five to tie the game at 4-4, then took a 6-4 lead on James Vardy's bases-loaded, two-run double to deep left center field.

Fuoco led off the seventh inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Manis and scored on a passed ball to put McGill ahead 8-7.  It was Fuoco's second hit of the day and he walked twice and added a single in the fourth.

Justin Hii picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Landen Moore and Daniel Porter pitched a scoreless final inning to seal the deal.

In the twin-bill opener, the Redmen could only muster two runs on six hits to spoil a solid pitching performance from freshman Adriano Petrangelo, who tossed a complete game five-hitter, striking out three.

The Redmen are now 6-6 and tied with the upstart Montreal Carabins for the fourth and final playoff berth in the six-team CIBA Northern Conference. Four games remain on the schedule, including a pair against third-place Ottawa (4-4) and two against cellar-dwelling John Abbott College (1-10).
McGill hosts John Abbott on Sept. 26 at Gary Carter field in Cote St. Luc, Que., at 7:30 p.m.
