MONTREAL – Josh Blair, a junior from Franklin Centre, Que., and sophomore
Estello Nap-Hill of Richmond, B.C., each tallied unconverted tries as McGill defeated the Montreal Carabins 10-6 in men's university rugby at Terrain Vincent d'Indy, Sunday.
The defending conference champion Redmen improved to 2-0 atop the RSEQ standings, while Montreal, an expansion team in the five-team league, dropped to 0-2.
McGill took a 10-0 lead over the first 10 minutes, then hung on as the Carabins mounted a minor comeback in the final stanza.
Roman Gomez reduced McGill's lead to 10-3 with a rare drop kick early in the second half. Three minutes later, Paul Côté-Lépine connected for a penalty goal to make for a nervy finish.
The Carabins came close to scoring with seven minutes remaining when they were within metres of the endzone but McGill's defence held strong.
The division-leading Redmen will try to extend their win streak to three when they host Concordia (1-0) at Molson Stadium on Sept. 21 at 4 p.m., while Montreal recieves a one-week bye before hosting Concordia on Sept. 28.
