QUEBEC CITY – It may not have been as impressive a performance as the final movement in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony but
Nathan Joyal came off the bench to orchestrate a key victory with a game-high 17 points, buttressed by a stellar 9-for-9 effort from the free-throw line, to give the visiting McGill Redmen a joyous 68-53 conquest over Laval in men's basketball at the Centre PEPS, Thursday.

With a 12-47 record in the last 59 meetings, McGill victories over Laval have been few and far between over the past decade but this was the third consecutive Redmen decision against the Rouge et Or since a 57-56 loss in Quebec City on Feb. 9, 2012.
The Redmen parlayed a 17-15 first quarter lead into a 37-23 advantage at the half and a 58-35 difference after three quarters.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” said Redmen third-year bench boss
David DeAveiro. “We've been fighting a flu bug all week in practice and it was a good team effort, considering the number of adjustments to our lineup. To win on the road is always a challenge. We executed and defended well tonight and took their large crowd out of the game fairly early.”
Joyal, a 6-foot-6, political science sophomore from St. Lazare, Que., also shot 3-for-5 from the floor, including a 2-for-4 performance from three-point range and was credited with one steal.
Bermuda native
Te'Jour Riley added 10 points and seven rebounds for McGill, which had to make do without starters
Adrian Hynes-Guery (shoulder) and
Christian McCue (flu). Sophomore
Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., contributed eight points, with
Simon Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que.,
Ave Bross of Toronto and
Gordon Duffley of Manchester, N.H., adding seven apiece. Duffley, who came off the bench to play 22 minutes, also pulled down six rebounds off the glass.
“We got a good effort off the bench today,” said DeAveiro, whose subs outscored Laval's bench by an impressive 34-18 margin. “I was especially pleased with Duffley's performance.”
For Laval, Boris Hadzimuratovic and Karl Demers-Belanger connected for 15 and 13 points, respectively.
McGill, which had a 37-26 advantage in rebounding and a 10-3 difference in steals, went an impressive 16-for-18 at the free-throw line, while Laval was equally sharp, going 18-for-21.
The Redmen shot 40.7 per cent from the floor (22/54) and 40.0 from beyond the arc (8/20), compared to Laval, which shot 30.8 and 20.0, respectively.
The two teams are slated to meet each other once more, on Feb. 21 at Love Competition Hall, where McGill will be looking for the first season sweep over the Rouge et Or since 1995-96.
McGill, which improved to 8-4 and shares first place with Bishop's (8-4), will host fourth-place UQAM (4-8) on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 4 p.m.
Laval dropped to 3-9 and sits two points behind UQAM for the final playoff berth with four games remaining before the post-season begins. The Rouge et Or will play at Bishop's on Feb. 13.
