MONTREAL – Adrian Hynes-Guery of Montreal made a triumphant return to the lineup, scoring a game-high 19 points as McGill defeated Bishop's 78-60 in a key men's basketball affair before a crowd of 333 at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

GAME STATS: http://www.sportetudiant-stats.com/universitaire/basketball-m/stats/1213/m26.htm

The victory improved McGill's record to 10-4 and put the Redmen in the driver's seat to finish atop the RSEQ conference standings for the first time since 2001, when they accomplished the feat by registered a 13-9 record.

Hynes-Guery, a first-year transfer from American International College, returned to the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury suffered against UQAM on Jan. 19.In 28 minutes of court time, the 6-foot-3 point-guard shot 7-for-11 from the field, including a stellar 4-for-6 effort from three-point range.

McGill got off to an explosive start, leading 26-18 after the opening quarter, 39-34 at the half and 56-48 after three stanzas.

Three other Redmen also reached double figures, with Bermuda native Te'Jour Riley netting 15, team captain Winn Clark of mission hills, Kansas, scoring 13 with seven rebounds and Christian McCue of Hampden, Maine, bagging a dozen points on a 4-for-4 performance from the three-point arc. Riley, who has turned up his game over the last two weeks, shot 7-for-12 and collected three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.

Mike Andrews, a 6-foot-10 centre from Oakville, Ont., led Bishop's with 19 points and five rebounds. Teammates Jeremy Leonard-Smith of Ottawa and Tim Hunter of Baie d'Urfé, Que., added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

McGill, which had a 28-21 edge in rebounds, shot a sizzling 54.4 per cent from the floor (31/57), an outrageous 52.4 from the arc (11/21) and 83.3 from the line (5/6). The gaiters countered with 38.6 (22/57), 33.3 (5/15) and 68.8 (11/16), respectively.

With two games remaining before the post-season, McGill is tied with Bishop's (10-5) atop the standings but hold a game in hand over the Gaiters, who will close out their season with a tough road game at Concordia (14-8) on Feb. 21. Should McGill and BU finish tied atop the standings, the Redmen hold the tie-breaker over Bishop's by the narrowest of margins. While the two teams split their four-game season series, McGill has the upper-hand by virtue of outscoring the Gaiters 262-260.

If the Stingers win their last two games (over Bishop's and Laval), they can only finish first if the Redmen drop their last two, which would create a tie. In that scenario, the Stingers would prevail as they split their season series with McGill but outscored the Redmen 274-257.

McGill can end all the speculation with a victory over last-place Laval (3-11) in their final regular season home game at Love Competition Hall on Feb. 21. If needed, they will have another shot to clinch the pennant on the road, at UQAM (5-10) on Feb. 23.

REDMEN RAP: Third-year guard Simon Bibeau, who lead the conference with a stunning 96.3 success rate in free-throw shooting (26/27), missed his second straight game with an elbow injury… His status to return is considered day-to-day… McGill is the top defensive club in the conference, allowing only 62.9 points per game… they are ranked third in scoring (68.3) and first in three-point shooting (38.0%).
