SUDBURY,
Ont. —
Miles King scored a game-high 22 points as McGill produced its highest offensive output in six years with a 91-75 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies in men's basketball, Saturday, to conclude the Peter Campbell Voyageurs Classic at Ben Avery Gym.

The Redbirds reached the 90-point plateau for the first time in 139 games, dating back to a 98-92 victory over Laval on Jan. 8, 2020. The result improved McGill's preseason record to 2-4, while Saskatchewan dropped to 3-6. It also evened McGill's lifetime record against the Huskies at 4-4.

McGill led 22-17 after the opening quarter and outscored Saskatchewan 27-20 in the second to carry a 49-37 advantage into halftime. The Redbirds dominated the third quarter 25-17 to build a commanding 74-54 lead before the Huskies claimed the final stanza 21-17.

The biggest difference came in shooting accuracy. McGill connected on a sizzling 56.7 per cent of its field-goal attempts, making 34 of 60 shots, compared with 37.3 per cent for Saskatchewan. The Redbirds were equally impressive from beyond the arc, draining nine of 16 three-point attempts for a 56.3 per cent success rate.

King, a 6-foot-2 guard from Montreal, shot 8-for-11 from the floor, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, and made two of four free throws. He added four rebounds and an assist in 29 minutes. His 22-point performance surpassed the career-high 21 points he scored against Manitoba on Oct. 2.

King, a 21-year-old economics sophomore, was one of five Redbirds to reach double figures. Isaac Moore contributed 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. He also collected five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Senior forward Saransh Padhy added 15 points and four rebounds, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor. Alexandre Reinert-Woodfine came off the bench to score 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while Sean Duff chipped in 10 points, a team-high six rebounds and four assists.

Rookie Antoine Bowen contributed eight points and a game-high seven assists without committing a turnover in 27 minutes. He also collected three rebounds and two steals.

Saskatchewan was led by Dylan Miller, who scored a game-high 23 points, including seven treys in 14 attempts. Easton Thimm followed with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while Makael Mian added nine points off the bench, connecting on all three of his baskets from beyond the arc.

McGill seized control in the opening half and stretched its lead to a game-high 22 points at 74-52 late in the period.

Saskatchewan made a modest fourth-quarter comeback, trimming the deficit to 12 points, but McGill maintained control to complete the 16-point victory.

The Redbirds also held a 30-22 advantage in rebounding and outscored Saskatchewan 38-22 in the paint. McGill registered 22 assists on its 34 field goals, compared with 12 assists for the Huskies.

Saskatchewan enjoyed an 18-5 advantage in points off turnovers, capitalizing on 16 McGill miscues while committing only nine of its own.

Both teams made 14 free throws, with McGill attempting 21 compared with 20 for Saskatchewan.

The Redbirds will continue their extended preseason road trip next weekend with three games in Antigonish, N.S. McGill will face host St. Francis Xavier on Oct. 16, followed by a confrontation with Acadia on Oct. 17 and a second meeting against St. FX on Oct. 18.
