Martlet Hockey vs. Montreal (Home)

MONTREAL – Gabrielle Davidson's first period power-play marker stood up as the game-winner as the No.1-ranked McGill University women's hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory over No.3-Montreal at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The victory extended McGill's win streak to 22 consecutive games, dating back to their final two contests at the Nationals last year. It also clinched first-place for the Martlets, who are 16-0 in the Quebec conference with four games left to play and 25-1 lifetime against the Carabins. McGill is gunning for a perfect 20-0 season, which would match the RSEQ record for wins that they established in 2009-10 and equaled in 2010-11

The game was a heated one, featuring 28 minutes in penalties. McGill went 2-for-8 on the power-play and snuffed out all six man-advantages by the Carabins. The Martlets had a convincing 26-16 edge in shots and senior goaltender Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., collected the win, improving her record to 10-0 on the season and 32-11-1 lifetime in 53 appearances overall. Carabins netminder Elodie Rousseau-Sirois was credited with 23 saves and dropped to 8-4.

"There was a good pace to the game," said Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets. "Both teams played well and it was a better pace than when we played them a couple of weeks ago. When you limit a team like U de M to only 16 shots, I think you are doing a pretty good job. Overall, we managed the puck real well. We still have some work to do but it was a good 60-minute effort overall."

The Martlets led 2-1 after one period on goals by Stacie Tardif and Davidson, sandwiched around a Carabins goal by Kim Deschenes.

Logan Murray added an insurance marker at the 25-second mark of the final stanza. teammate Kelsie Moffatt was the only player with multiple points, collecting assists on goals by Davidson and Murray.

"The line of Logan, Katia and Gabby was our best line tonight," noted Smith. "They were real sharp, created a lot of opportunities and were good in all three zones. They were real responsible on both sides of the puck."

Melodie Daoust, who leads the nation in scoring with 17-29-46 in 16 games, was held of the scoresheet for the first time this season, putting an end to a 15-game point-scoring streak.

McGill plays at Concordia (2-13-1) on Saturday (Feb. 2) at 2:30 p.m.
