Mariam Sylla scored a game-high 15 points and Gabriella Hebert added 13 as the McGill women's basketball team defeated Montana State - Northern 59-51 at the Frontier College Las Vegas Shootout Tournament featuring teams from the CIS and NAIA, at Durango high school, Saturday.
It was the second victory in as many days over an American collegiate team for the sixth-ranked Martlets, who led improved to 10-2 overall. The Skylights (11-2), who hail from Havre, Montana and play in the U.S.-based Frontier Conference, suffered their second straight setback after opening their season with 11 consecutive victories. Their streak ended in the tourney opener on Friday with a 63-56 loss to Regina, the No.4-ranked team in the CIS.
"McGill was a totally different team than Regina, but still very good," Chris Mouat, head coach of the Skylights, told the Havre Daily News. "They were fast and quick and athletic. They defended very well and they shot it very well. And... we just didn't do enough on offence to get over the hump."
Sylla, who added a team-high eight rebounds with one block and a steal, went 5-for-10 from the floor and was a perfect 5-or-5 from the line. Hebert, who went 3-for-5 from the three-point arc, pulled down five boards and was credited with one steal.
McGill, which led 31-24 at halftime, had nine players inscribed on the scoresheet and a dozen who were credited with at least one rebound. They shot 35.0 per cent from the floor (21/60), 26.9 from three-point range (7/26) and made 10 of 14 attempts from the foul-line, comapred to MSU-N, who shot 34.0, 11.1 and 69.6, respectively.
Taylor Cummings led the Skylights with 10 points.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Helene bibeau (8 pts),
Dianna Ros and jennifer Silver (5 each),
Roya Assadi and
Marie-Pier Bastrash (4 each),
Francoise Charest (3) and
Carolann Cloutier (2).
The Martlets are tentatively scheduled to play the Alberta Pandas on Dec. 29 before returning home to Montreal.
