Davidson hits daily double as Martlets down Gee-Gees

Gabrielle Davidson
Box Score
MONTREAL – Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., score twice as the No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team stretched their win streak to four with a 4-2 victory over visiting Ottawa at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

It was McGill's 29th consecutive decision over the Gee-Gees and improved their lifetime record against Ottawa to 74-12-7 in 93 meetings overall.

Davidson opened the scoring on the power play at 2:59 of the first period and put McGill ahead 3-1 with what proved to be the game-winner midway through the final stanza.

She now leads the RSEQ conference and ranks third in the nation with seven goals in just four games.

Erika Pyke put the Martlets up 2-0 just 87 seconds after Davidson's first marker and it appeared that McGill were on their way to another rout.

However, the Gee-Gees had other ideas and sophomore Camille Pauck-Therrien of Boucherville, Que., narrowed the gap to 2-1

The Martlets took that lead into the second period but neither team was able to score until Davidson came through in the final frame.

Trailing 3-1, Ottawa pulled goaltender Stephanie Mercier in the final minute and the moved paid off – for the second time this season – when Carolann Upshall struck pay dirt with six seconds remaining in regulation.

Ottawa kept the extra attacker out and five seconds later, Leslie Oles bagged a buzzer-beating empty-netter. Oles, who finished third in conference scoring race last year, now finds herself leading the league with 4-7-11 in four contests, two points ahead of Davidson.

Mercier made 36 saves in a losing cause as McGill had a 40-18 edge in shots. The Martlets have now reached the 40-shot plateau in each of their four games.

Taylor Hough, who was making her second start of the campaign, saved 16 of 18 shots and collected her second won.

McGill was 1-for-5 on the power-play and erased both shorthanded situations.

The Martlets PP is now operating at a league-leading 25.9 per cent at 7-for-27.  In fact, it ranks as the second-best PP in the nation, behind St. FX, which is function at a 26.1 success rate.

McGill's penalty-killing unit still needs a bit of refinement as they rank fourth in the league with a 78.6 kill rate.

The second-place Gee-Gees, who dropped to 3-2, will host Carleton (1-5) on Nov. 9.

The Martlets, who improved to 6-0 against CIS opponents and 4-0 in league play, will return to action on Nov. 8 when they resume their cross-town rivalry the Montreal Carabins at  Arena CEPSUM.
