McGill's Murray masterful as Martlets skunk Carabins in battle of nation's top hockey teams

Box Score
MONTREAL – Logan Murray of Calgary tallied twice and set up another as the top-ranked McGill Martlets skunked the No.2 Montreal Carabins 5-0 in a showdown between the nation's top two women's hockey teams at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

It was McGill's 35th consecutive victory in league play and their third straight over the defending national champion Carabins, who upset the RSEQ pennant-winning Martlets in the playoffs last spring. Sunday's result also improved McGill's lifetime record over their cross-town rivals to 30-3-0 overall.

The Martlets, who held a 33-14 advantage in shots, led 1-0 after the opening period and were comfortably ahead 3-0 after two. All five goals were of the greasy variety, coming from right in front of the crease, including two on deflections and two on rebounds. McGill was 2-for-3 on the power-play and killed off both shorthanded situations.

"We got off to a good start and got better as the game wore on," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "Everything was clicking for us and it was one of our top two complete performances of the season, right up there with our win over St. Lawrence (NCAA) last week."

Murray, a senior majoring in world religions, was credited with the game-winner when she opened the scoring at 9:57 of the first period. It was only her third marker of the season but she wasn't satisfied with that and struck again, on the power-play to make it 3-0 at 15:53 of the middle stanza. She also set up linemate Chelsey Saunders, a senior from Ottawa who connected for her first of the campaign to cap off the scoring with 40 seconds remaining in the contest.

"It's nice to see Logan and Chelsey rewarded for their hard work," said Smith. "They've been playing well but the puck hadn't been going in for them."

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was senior defenceman Michelle Daigneault of Hay River, N.W.T., and sophomore Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., who struck paydirt for her CIS-leading 14th goal of the season.

Andrea Weckman, a fifth-year neuroscience senior from Kitchener, Ont., made 14 saves between the pipes to post her second shutout of the season and ninth career goose-egg in 50 career appearances overall. She is now 4-0 on the season, 19-0 lifetime in league play and 28-9-2 overall.

"The girls were really happy for Weckman and gave her the game puck," noted Smith. "She wasn't extremely busy but stayed focussed and made some solid saves. She gives the team a lot of confidence back there."

Carabins netminder Elodie Rousseau-Sirois was beaten five times on 33 shots and took the loss, evening her record at 3-3.

The Martlets, who improved to 11-0 overall against CIS teams and 9-0 in regular-season play, will close out the first semester on Friday morning, Nov. 29 when they host Concordia (2-5-1) in their first annual "Score with School" game.  With 800 advance tickets already pre-sold to the Lester B. Pearson School Board, a capacity crowd is expected for the game, which is slated for a 10:30 a.m. start.
