Box Score
TORONTO – Tyler McGee scored two goals and added an assist as the York Lions surprised No.4-ranked McGill 3-1 in OUA men's university hockey at the Canlan Ice Sports Centre, Saturday.
It snapped McGill's win streak at five as the red-hot Redmen were as cold as ice, but not willing to sacrifice, to borrow a line from the rock group Foreigner.
"They beat us in all aspects of the game," said McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes. "Foot races, work ethic, faceoffs, hits, (quality) shots, and goals. I was very disappointed with our effort, from top to bottom."
The Redmen went 0-for-8 on the power-play, including a fruitless two-man advantage for 61 seconds before the midway mark of the opening period. York, which was outshot 35-25, led 1-0 after the first period and maintained a 3-1 advantage after two.
The Lions pounced early, catching McGill flat-footed when McGee scored only 54 seconds after the opening faceoff.
Jonathan Brunelle tied the score at 1:50 of the middle stanza, converting passes from
Mathieu Pompei and team captain
Benoit Levesque.
But York regained the lead less than four minutes later when McGee set up Evan Gravenor. They extended the margin to two when McGee clicked again with an insurance marker at 19:52 of the middle period.
York goaltender Andrew Perugini kicked aside 34 of 35 shots for the win, while McGill's
Andrew Flemming saved 22 of 25 and took the loss.
"We weren't good tonight but that happens once in a while and we'll learn from that," said Nobes. "We've got four games left, all at home before the exam break. We'll refocus, have a good week of practice and be prepared."
York, which improved to 7-5-0, plays at UQTR (7-4-0) and Concordia (2-5-3), Nov. 22-23. McGill is now 19-11-6 in 36 lifetime meeting against York. The Redmen are 8-2-1 in regular season play and now sit tied with Queen's (6-0-5) atop the OUA Eastern Division.
McGill will host Laurier (3-5-1) and Waterloo (5-5-1), Nov. 22-23, respectively. Then the Redmen will host Concordia on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the annual "Score with School" game, a 10:30 am affair that is a virtual sell-out as the Montreal English School Board has pre-purchased about 800 tickets in the 950-seat McConnell Arena. The Redmen will close out their fall schedule on Nov. 30 against Laurentian (3-8-0), a new expansion team from Sudbury.
REDMEN RAP: The Redmen were without the services of freshman goaltender
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, who is recovering from an unspecified injury suffered last week. A product of the QMJHL who had a tryout with the Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate in Hamilton last year, he leads all OUA goalies in goals-against average (1.28) and save percentage (.954)... Filling in for him this past weekend was sophomore
Pierre-Olivier Bousquet, who was with the Redmen last year but was cut in training camp this fall... The other goaltender on McGill's roster is
Karel St. Laurent, who is not eligible to play until January.
