LENNOXVILLE --
Patrick Mulherin of Calgary touched down with a pair of tries as the visiting McGill men's rugby squad skunked Bishop's 20-0 at Coulter Field, Friday, to clinch first place in the Quebec conference.
The Redmen tallied four tries to collect their fifth bonus point in the RSEQ standings and finish the regualr season with a 7-1 record and 33 points. There only setback was to the Stingers, splitting the two-game series.
Second-place Concordia is 5-1 with 21 points and two games in hand but because of the bonus points accumulated by McGill, the best the Stingers could do, if they won both remaining contests and scored at least four tries in each, would be to end up two points shy,
Also scoring one try apiece was
Thomas Stokes and
Noam Berson, both natives of Vancouver, B.C. None of the tries were converted as the game was playd in extremely high winds, which played havoc with kicking.
Environment Canada's weather office reported winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour during the afternoon, which forced the postponement of the Carabins rugby game at Concordia. The winds knocked down trees all over the city, and at the storm's peak nearly 91,000 homes and businesses on the island were without electricity.
Spencer Paveck from Ottawa, Ont., was named man of the match for the Redmen, who will now begin to prepare for a home playoff game, against the fourth-place club, which will either be the Montreal Carabins (1-5) or Bishop's (1-6), in two weeks time.
