Laval edges McGill in meaningless season finale as soccer Redmen focus on playoffs

QUEBEC CITY -- Patrice Dion scored twice, including the winning tally on a penalty kick, as Laval edged visiting McGill 2-1 to close out the regular season in RSEQ men's university soccer at Stade PEPS, Sunday.

It was a good news, bad news day for the Redmen. The bad news was losing on a penalty shot but the good news was that McGill, under first-year head coach Marc Mounicot, have made the playoffs.

Midfielder Mohamed Kleit, an electrical engineering freshman from Outremont, Que., who joined the team just a few weeks ago, tallied the lone McGill marker and was selected by the Laval coaching staff as McGill's player of the game.

Dion won similiar honours for the Rouge et Or.

Redmen goalkeeper Thomas Daechsel started in place of banged up veteran Max Leblond and was credited with five saves in a losing cause. Jean-François Desrosiers made one save collected the victory for Laval.

Leblond, who was able to play if called upon, was one of seven starters rested with nicks and bruises as the game had no bearing on the final standings for McGill. Others kept out of the lineup included defenders Dominic Bell and Graham Kasper, midfielders Marc Palaci-Olgun and William Hoyle, as well as strikers Massimo Di Ioia and Alexander King,

Laval, which need to win to have a shot at catching the first-place Carabins, opened the scoring in the ninth minute but McGill evened the count at 1-1 in the 30th minute. The game was decided with 13 minutes remaining when the Rouge et Or were awarded a penalty kick on a disputed handball and Dion took advantage.

"I very much disagreed with that call," said Mounicot, whose troops had matched Laval, play-for-play, despite a depleted lineup. "We just want to play a solid game to prepare for the playoffs and we achieved they until the call. We will have to carry that positive mindset into the playoffs. Our group has to believe that anything is possible. One spot is available for the CIS national championships and we have a week to get prepared."

McGill, which received an early Christmas bonus of two points this week, finished fourth in the seven-team RSEQ conference with a 4-5-3 record. The Redmen were tied with Concordia (5-7-0) for the final playoff berth but won the tie-breaker based on winning both head-to-head meetings with the Stingers.

The Redmen were the beneficieries of a UQAM forfeit from a 0-0 draw on Oct. 17. The Citadins, who were in contention for first place, forfeited that game, as well as a 6-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 20, for dressing a player who was supposed to be serving an automatic suspension after having accumulated three yellow cards over the season. Both forfeited games will officially be recorded as 3-0.

McGill will travel around Mt. Royal for a league semifinal against the division-leading Montreal Carabins (8-2-2) on Friday, Nov. 1. The men's game is slated for 8:30 p.m. and will follow the women's semifinal (6:30 pm), also between McGill and Montreal.

UQAM, which dropped to third-place with a revised 6-5-1 record, will travel to Quebec City and play second-place Laval in the other semifinal, slated for the same day.
