MONTREAL -- An early 9-0 deficit was too much for the McGill men's rugby squad to overcome as the Stingers came away with a 19-13 home-field victory, Friday, to snap McGill's 12-game win streak at Concordia Stadium.
It marked McGill's first loss against an RSEQ opponent dating back to last year. And excluding four forfeits early last season, the last time that the Redmen had lost to a Quebec opponent was 28 games ago in a 17-10 setback to Concordia on Oct. 24, 2010.
In a game that featured only two tries it was Concordia's kicking game that stole the show. Joseph Fulginiti, the "man of the match" for the Stingers, was successful on four penalty kicks and one conversion accounting for 14 points.
Caleb Jordan tallied Concordia's remaining five points on a try.
McGill's lone try came from
Hugo Peurois, a third-year centre from Grenoble, France. Teammate
Cameron Perrin, from North Vancouver, B.C., added one conversion and two penalty kicks to round out the scoring.
The "man of the match" for McGill was
Estello Nap-Hill, a third year arts student from Richmond, B.C.
McGill (6-1) can clinch first-place in the five-team RSEQ conference with a road win at Bishop's (1-4) on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
The Redmen have a comfortable seven-point lead over second-place Concordia (6-1) with the help of four bonus points in the standings. Bonus points are awarded when a team scores four tries or more in a game, or when a team loses by seven points or less.
However, the Stingers have two games remaining -- at home to Montreal (1-5) and at Bishop's -- so they have a mathemaatical chance of collecting 10 points should they win both, scoring at least four tries in each.
