STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. -- Two natives of France were among five different players to score as the McGill men's rugby squad earned a satisfying 27-13 win against the Montreal Carabins at McEwen Field on the University's Macdonald campus in suburban Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Saturday.
The Redmen extended their unbeaten record to 6-0 with two games left in the regular season. They had a strong first half despite two missed conversions, taking a 17-5 lead with tries from
Estello Nap-Hill, an arts student from Richmond, B.C., and centres
Hugo Peurois and
Emeric Durand de Bousingen, both natives of France, with the latter adding one conversion.
Charles Kalash scored the first-half try by the Carabins, who showed some life after the half with a try from Romain Gomez and a penalty kick by Paul Côté-Lépine. But McGill answered with 10 points of their own off a try by
James Wilson of London (England) and conversion by
Thomas Stokes of Vancouver, B.C. Stokes also added a a penalty kick.
By scoring four tries the Redmen earned their third bonus point in the standings, which is awarded when a team scores more than three tries in a game.
"The boys did what they needed to do and a bonus point win is a big one," said assistant coach
Ian Baillie.
The Redmen sit atop the RSEQ standings with 27 points, well ahead of second-place Sherbrooke's 14. McGill is mathematically assured of finishing ahead of Sherbrooke but could still be caught by third-place Concordia (3-2), who have a game in hand and could finish with a maximum of 28 points. The final two Redmen games are on the road at Concordia (Nov. 26 at 9:30 p.m.) and last-place Bishop's (Nov. 1).
