LENNOXVILLE, Que. – It may have been a dirty dozen but a 12-point performance by Jeremy Leonard-Smith of Ottawa served as a game-high to give unranked Bishop's a low-scoring 56-42 decision over No. 10-ranked McGill in men's university basketball action at the Mitchell gymnasium, Wednesday.

It was McGill's lowest offensive output in 38 games overall – dating back to a 51-35 road loss at UQAM on Nov. 18, 2011 – and was the best defensive performance by the Gaiters this season.

The result broke a three-way logjam atop the RSEQ standings, with BU moving into sole possession of the top spot at 7-4. McGill and Concordia are tied for second with identical 6-4 records in the five-team conference.

Bishop's owned the first quarter, opening with back to back-to-back three-pointers and took a 25-8 lead. The Redmen shot well in the second stanza, outscoring the Gaiters 16-14 and narrowing the gap to 39-24 at the half. The sleepy affair produced a low-scoring third quarter, with McGill outscoring the Gaiters by a 7-6 margin.

The contest featured 50 turnovers, including 27 to the Redmen.

Tim Hunter of Baie d'Urfé, Que., contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for the Gaiters, who dominated under the glass, with a 40-27 edge in rebounding.

Nathan Joyal of St. Lazare, Que., led a feeble Redmen attack that was missing injured point-guard
Adrian Hynes-Guery, who leads the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game.

Joyal tallied 11 points and four rebounds, while teammates
Winn Clark of Mission Hills, Kansas, and
Aleksandar Mitrovic, a native of Belgrade, had nine points apiece. The next highest scorer for McGill was
Te'Jour Riley, who hails from Bermuda and had only four points and a game-high five rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time before fouling out in the third quarter.

The Redmen shot 34.0 per cent from the floor (16/47), 26.7 from the arc and a paltry 42.9 from the line (6/14), compared to Bishop's, which shot 38.9, 31.8 and 70.0, respectively.

The Gaiters will travel to Montreal this weekend to take on fourth-place UQAM (4-7) on Saturday.

McGill will host Concordia on Friday at 8 p.m. in a battle to claw their way back into a share of first place. The Redmen won their first confrontation with their cross-town rivals, a 69-68 thriller at Concordia. But the Stingers took the next two, 83-65 at McGill and 62-60 at the Loyola campus.

It will be also be McGill's annual “Pack the House” game and a capacity crowd is expected for Love Competition Hall. The much-anticipated showdown will be preceded by the Martlets-Stingers matchup at 6 p.m. in the annual “Shoot for the Cure” fundraiser for breast cancer. Advance tickets are available at the Redbird Sports Shop inside the Currie gym. Adults are $10, students and seniors are $5. Children 12-and-under are admitted free.
