Stingers turn tables on hockey Redmen with shootout win

Jean-Philippe Mathieu (right) scores first CIS goal
Box Score
MONTREAL – George Lovatsis, a senior from Markham, Ont., set up one goal, scored another with the goaltender pulled and 35 seconds remaining to force overtime, then potted the only goal in a post-overtime shootout as Concordia rallied to knock off the McGill Redmen 3-2 in a spirited OUA men's hockey game at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The result gave Concordia two wins in three meetings with their cross-town rivals, marking the first time in 11 years that the Stingers had won the season series from McGill.

Lovatsis also set up the game's first marker, scored by right-winger Alexandre Monahan of Mascouche, Que., only 22 seconds after the opening faceoff.

Redmen rearguard Jean-Philippe Mathieu of Loretteville, Que., tied the score at 1-1 when he connected with his first-ever CIS marker, on the power-play at 8:30 of the second period. It looked like McGill had the game in hand midway through the third period when they took a 2-1 lead on rookie Patrick Delisle-Houde's power-play marker at 11:51.

But the Stingers turned the tables on McGill in the final minute of play, avenging the previous meeting on Jan. 9, which ended in a similar fashion for the Redmen, who pulled their goalie to score, then won in overtime.

McGill had a 39-31 edge in shots as goaltender Andrew Flemming took the loss, dropping his win-loss record to 6-7. Rookie Antonio Mastropietro was credited with 37 saves (not including three in the shootout), improving his record to 3-8.

The Redmen were 2-for-4 on the power-play, while Concordia went 0-for-3. McGill's PK unit has now killed off eight consecutive shorthanded situations.

McGill, which dropped to 14-6-3, remains third in the OUA East with five games remaining before playoffs. They sit three points in arrears of second-place Carleton (16-6-2) with a game in hand. They can close the gap with a win over the Ravens in Ottawa on Sunday in a game that is slated to be webcast on the SSN Canada network. Puck drop is 3 p.m.

The ninth-place Stingers (6-14-3) are three points out of a playoff spot with a game in hand over eight-place Ryerson (9-15-0) and face a crucial game in Ottawa (11-7-4) on Sunday at 6 p.m.

McGill is now 84-93-14 lifetime against the Stingers, including a 28-7-1 record in their last 36 confrontations. The teams will not meet again this season unless they cross-paths in the post-season.

REDMEN RAP: All three McGill players were held scoreless in the shootout session – Delisle-Houde, defenceman Ryan McKiernan and Justin Ducharme – giving the Redmen a paltry 1-for-14 success rate over their four shootouts this season. The only player to hit pay dirt is blueliner Keven Dupont in a 3-2 OTS win over Toronto on Nov. 23, 2012… Forwards Justin Ducharme and Benoit Levesque returned to the McGill lineup, which left four forwards still sidelined with fairly serious injuries (co-captains Marc-Andre Daneau and Patrick Belzile, as well as Jonathan Brunelle and leading scorer Chris Longpre Poirier)… The team has now lost 83 man games due to injury.
