The result created a fascinating three-way log-jam atop the RSEQ standings between Concordia, McGill and Bishop's. Each team owns a 6-3 record with seven games remaining before playoffs.

The visiting Redmen got off to a great start and a 16-6 lead but Concordia awoke from their slumber and narrowed the gap to 16-11 by the end of the opening quarter. The Stingers rallied to outscore McGill 18-8 in the second stanza to enter halftime with a 29-24 lead and extended that to 48-40 after three quarters. Concordia went ahead 52-42 with 8:38 remaining in the game but McGill mounted a spirited comeback and tied the score at 60-60 when veteran Aleksandar Mitrovic, a native of Belgrade, sunk a lay-up and drained a free-throw to complete a three-point play with just 62 seconds remaining in regulation.

That set the stage for Laroche, who made good on a jumper with 34 seconds left on the clock to finish with 14 points. McGill had a good chance to tie the game when freshman Christian McCue of Hampden, Maine, stole a ball and broke loose on a breakaway up the middle. He was challenged from behind and was unable to get away a shot as the ball was knocked loose. The Redmen also had a shot to tie it on a buzzer-beater but Te'Jour Riley's attempt was blocked by Kafil Eyitayo.

Third-year guard Simon Bibeau, recovering from knee surgery, made his second start of the season and led the Redmen with 19 points in 35 minutes of playing time. The native of St. Bruno, Que., shot 6-for-14 from the field and made six of seven attempts from the free-throw line.

Teammate Vincent Dufort, a sophomore from Smiths Falls, Ont., added 13 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds and was credited with four steals before fouling out in the final minute. He played a game-high 38 minutes. Brazilian Rodrigo Imperador came off the bench to contribute 10 points and five rebounds. Mitrovic, who started, ended up with eight points and three steals but was in early foul trouble and played only 17 minutes before being saddled with a technical foul.

McGill shot 37.3 per cent from the floor (22/59) but their Achilles heel proved to be their poor shooting from three-point range, as they connected on just two of 19 attempts. They were brilliant from the foul-line, making 14 of 16 attempts but the Stingers went to the line nine more times and produced 21 of their points from there.

Concordia, which had a 40-30 edge under the boards, shot 34 per cent from the floor and 26.3 from beyond the arc.

McGill plays at Bishop's on Jan. 30 before hosting the Stingers in what could be a sell-out at Love Competition Hall for the annual “Pack the House” promotion on Feb.1. That men's and women's doubleheader will also double as a “Shoot for the Cure” fundraiser for breast cancer.
