The Redmen moved back into sole possession of first place atop the RSEQ conference standings with a 6-2 record, two points ahead of Concordia (5-3) and Bishop's (5-3).
Mitrovic, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound native of Serbia, played a team-high 29 minutes and shot 7-for-11 from the floor. He leads the Quebec league in field-goal shooting with a 57.7 per cent success rate. Mitrovic also had a team-leading four of McGill's 15 steals as an unusually aggressive Redmen squad forced UQAM into 22 turnovers. McGill only coughed up the ball nine times.
The unranked Redmen, who are 13-4 against CIS opponents overall, have now won three in a row after putting a halt to a three-game losing skid over the holidays. McGill never trailed in the game and were in overdrive from the start, galloping into a stunning 19-2 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. They extended that to 24-5 after the opening stanza, 40-17 at the half and 62-31 after three quarters.
“I think we came out as a desperate team today,” said
David DeAveiro, in his third season as Redmen bench boss. “We tried to make our kids understand that we have to play every minute of every quarter that way. If we can do that, most teams don't see that in their own practices so they're not ready for that kind of intensity. So it was important for us to come out with intensity right from the opening tip-off.”
Perhaps an even more staggering statistic than the lopsided first quarter score was the fact that the Redmen only went to the free-throw line once in the entire game, which would no doubt be a CIS record, if they kept such statistics. Point-guard
Adrian Hynes-Guery of Montreal made that lone free-throw to finish off a three-point play. He ended up with 11 points to go with three rebounds, five assists and a steal.
By contrast, the Citadins made 20 trips to the line and scored 13 of their 42 points on gimmees. They shot a sub-par 28.9 per cent from the floor and 23.1 from three-point range. McGill replied on 41.4 from the floor and went 9-for-18 from beyond the arc.
Also in double figures for McGill was third-year guard
Simon Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., who is recovering nicely from knee surgery and came off the bench to score 11 points in 20 minutes of court time. He went 3-for-4 from the arc. Bibeau is ranked second in the league with a 48.4 success rate in shooting treys.
McGill captain
Winn Clark of Mission Hills, Kan., added nine points. Teammate
Nathan Joyal of St. Lazare, Que., pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, to go with three points, as many assists and a steal.
Starting guard
Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., had six points and four rebounds before running into foul trouble. He shares the league lead in rebounding with an average of 8.9 per game.
The Citadins were led by Montrealer Richard Addai (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Alexandre Bernard (8 points) of Gatineau, Que.
“We were in such a good groove before Christmas and were playing so well. It was a nice rhythm,” said DeAveiro. “We needed the break because our bodies were tired and we had some injuries. But it also broke that rhythm and now we're starting to find our way again.”
Eight games remain before playoffs and McGill will now go on the road for games at Concordia (Jan. 24) and at Bishop's (Jan. 30) before returning to the Currie gym on Feb. 1 for another confrontation with the Stingers.
REDMEN RAP: McGill has won five of their last six meetings with the Citadins and have now evened their all-time head-to-head series at 20-20 lifetime… Former McGill head coach Nevio Marzinotto was acting as interim head coach for UQAM as Olga Hrycak, their head coach for the past 10 years, was sidelined on the bench during the game but unable to move much as she was stricken last month with a herniated disc in her back.
