MONTREAL - Laval striker Patrice Dion of Quebec City scored from the box just five minutes into the second half as the visiting Rouge et Or salvaged a 1-1 draw with McGill in men's soccer on a slick, rain-soaked field at Molson Stadium, Sunday.

Laval, which blanked the Redmen 1-0 in their previous meeting two weeks ago, had an 11-7 edge in shots toward net. Both 'keepers - McGill's Max Leblondand Laval senior Vincent Cournoyer - registered four saves to earn the draw.

"I would've been happier with a win but when you take a point off a team that entered the game in first place, it's not the end of the world," said Jose Valdes, head coach of the Redmen. "I was pleased with how hard our guys pressed to the net for most of the game. You could see in their eyes that they wanted to win badly and that's always a good sign."

Rookie Henri Ashe-Taylor had given the Redmen a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when he converted pass from Marc Palaci-Olgun, a sophomore from Montreal.

It was the third marker of the season for Ashe-Taylor, a science freshman who now leads the team in scoring and is tied for third among RSEQ conference leaders with four points

"He comes from London (England), so it's taken us a while to learn how to play around him and best utilize his skills," said Valdes. "He's technically creative and has a very good touch on the ball."

The Redmen now sit tied for third in the seven team Quebec conference with a 2-3-3 record, four points out of first but also four points out of last place. They are off until Oct. 11 when they play host to cellar-dwelling Concordia (1-4-2) at Molson Stadium (8:30 p.m.). The cross-town rivals played to a 1-1 draw at Concordia on Sept. 14.
