Martlet Hockey vs. Queen's (Away)
Won 4-3 (OTS) at Queen's (EXHIBITION)
KINGSTON, Ont. – Katia Clément-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored the lone goal in a post-overtime shootout as McGill escaped with a 4-3 win over Queen's to capture the Gaels 2012 Triangular Series tournament at the Invista Centre, Sunday.
The Martlets, the 2012 CIS bronze medallists, took an early lead on their first offensive play of the game when freshman Gabrielle Davidson of Pointe Claire, Que., scored just 43 seconds in. Davidson added another goal at 3:24 mark to put the Martlets up 2-0.
"We were terrific for the first 12 minutes of the game and played with a lot of structure," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith. "But we kind of got sidetracked and had a hard time sticking to the game plan."
The Gaels narrowed the gap in the second period when Brittany McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., scored at the 5:47 mark. Her sister Morgan knotted the score at 2-2 at the 12:46 mark.
However, less than four minutes later, Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., scored off a faceoff as the Martlets regained the lead 3-2. But the Gaels evened the score again when Taryn Pilon of Peterborough, Ont., connected with just 30 seconds before the intermission.
The two teams remained tied through the third period and a five-minute overtime, forcing the shootout.
Goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher of Ottawa, Ont., made 27 saves in a losing cause for the Gaels. McGill's Taylor Hough, a freshman from Toronto, chalked up 17 saves over the first two periods before being replaced by Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., who was credited with seven saves and the victory. She also added three big saves in the shootout.
McGill finished 2-0 in the triangular series, while Queen's finished at 1-1 and Guelph was 0-2.
The Martlets, who improved to 3-1 overall in preseason play, return to action next weekend when they travel States-side for road games at Providence (Sept. 29) and Boston College (Sept. 30).
