Box Score
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Sophomore Mike Hammond of Victoria, B.C., scored a pair of shorthanded markers, including one on a penalty shot, as Lakehead rallied with three unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes to edge McGill 5-4 in men's exhibition hockey before 2,529 at the Fort William Gardens, Saturday.

It marked the second consecutive night that a penalty shot was awarded, resulting in a shorthanded goal. The game also featured five power-play goals and 90 minutes in penalties, including 46 to the Redmen, who connected on 3-of-6 PP opportunities. The Thunderwolves went 2-for-7.

Hammond, who also added a pair of assists, erased a 4-2 McGill lead in the final period, scoring at 10:13, followed by his penalty shot marker at 12:47 to even the score at 4-4. He then set up team captain Adam Sergerie, who also tallied twice, for the game-winner on the power-play with 4:58 remaining in the contest.

McGill appeared to be in control, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by rookie Jonathan Brunelle (PPG) at 15:39 of the first and Nicolas Biniek at 37 seconds of the middle frame. Matt Caria narrowed the gap to 2-1 at 6:07 of the second but rearguard Ryan McKiernan re-established McGill's two-goal cushion at 8:22. Less than 10 minutes later, Sergerie converted a pass from Hammond with his first of the game to make it 3-2 after two.

Freshman Patrick Delisle-Houde put the Redmen ahead 4-2 at 4:32 of the final stanza which set the stage for Lakehead's spirited comeback.

Both teams had 33 shots on goal as Andrew Flemming made 28 saves and took the loss for the Redmen, while Lakehead's Jeff Bosch collected the victory with 29 saves.

McGill, which dropped to 13-8 against CIS opponents, will resume conference play on Friday, Jan. 4 when they host second-place Carleton (10-4-2) in a key OUA match-up. The fourth-place Redmen (10-5) sit two points in arrears of the Ravens, with a game in hand.
