Redmen play rare penalty-free game, win for 10th time in last 12 contests

Box Score KINGSTON -- Freshman Patrick Delisle-Houde of Quebec City, set up four goals and senior Chris Longpré-Poirierof Longueuil, Que., scored twice to go along with an assist as visiting McGill slayed the Royal Military College Paladins 7-2 in OUA men's hockey, Saturday, at Constantine Arena.

It marked the fourth consecutive win and 10th in a dozen games for the defending national champs, who began the regular season with a less than stellar 0-3 record.

The Redmen were in control from start to finish, outshooting the military school 41-19. They led 2-0 after one period and 5-1 after two.

"It was a good team win tonight, we had everybody going and we played a full 60 minutes, which is something that we haven't done enough this season," said Kelly Nobes, in his third year as head coach of the Redmen. "It was a good way to finish the first half. We had a pretty good semester after overcoming a rough start, considering that we added 11 new players and had so many injuries. We're finally starting to figure things out."

With about 43 man-games lost to injury – including a combined 21 by co-captains Marc-André Daneau andPatrick Belzile – only five Redmen managed to dress for all 15 regular season games in the first semester.

The game featured only one penalty, a too-many-men infraction against RMC in the second period. It was the 14th time in school history that McGill had played a penalty-free contest and marked the second such occurrence in 45 years. The last time it happened was at Concordia on Feb. 13, 2011 and the time before that was on Feb. 8, 1967 against Queen's.

Delisle-Houde, a 6-foot-1, 193-pound left-winger who joined the Redmen out of Moncton in the QMJHL, registered assists on four consecutive goals helping his mates take a 5-0 lead by the 13-minute mark of the middle period. His performance was one short of the McGill single-game record for most assists on consecutive goals, set by Kelly Nobes against Queen's on Oct. 6, 1996.

Longpré-Poirier, who leads the team in scoring with 9-6-15 in 14 contests, put the Redmen ahead 2-0 in the first and 5-0 in the second. He added a helper which made the score 4-0.

"It was good to see Chris play as well as he did this weekend," added Nobes. "He's been very productive for us and got a couple of nice goals tonight and led the way."

McGill opened the scoring only 14 seconds after the opening faceoff when Benoit Levesque of Vaudreuil, Que., connected for his third of the season. It marked the fastest goal to start a game in team history, breaking the previous mark of 16 seconds, set by Patrick Delisle-Houde last month in a 5-2 win over Waterloo on Nov. 3, 2012.

Other McGill marksmen included veterans Marc-Olivier Vachon (4th) of Thetford Mines, Que., who was credited with the game-winner, and Vincent Bourgeois (1st) of Rosemere, Que., as well as freshmen Trevor Braun of Windham, Me., who hit pay-dirt for the third time in three contests, and Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., who produced his seventh of the season.

Trailing 5-0, RMC's Scott Domenico, who hails from Ottawa, broke Hubert Morin's bid for a shutout with one second remaining in the second period. The other Paladins marker came from the stick of Nicolas Metayer of Quebec City to make the score 6-2 at 9:01 of the final period.

Morin, a fifth-year engineering senior from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., collected 17 saves to reach the 3,000 plateau over his five seasons. He improved to 5-1 on the campaign and 87-30-2 in 127 career contests. Morin quietly broke the school record for overall wins on Nov. 3 against Waterloo, surpassing the previous standard of 84 set by Mathieu Poitras, who played in a school record 130 games from 2004 to 2008.

McGill finished the first half with a 13-8-0 record overall and a 10-4 mark in league action. They will get a four-week break to focus on exams and the holidays before resuming their schedule with a couple on non-conference games against Lakehead in Thunder Bay, Ont., Dec. 28-29.

REDMEN RAP: McGill extended their win streak over RMC to 13 straight games, dating back to a 2-1 loss on Jan. 26, 2008… The Redmen are now 54-8-4 lifetime against the Paladins in a series that began more than a century ago, in 1892… A few Redmen alumni spotted in the arena was Doug Orr (2001-06), who recently became a father, newly-wed Chad Blundy (2000-05) and of course Adam Shell (1999-03), who is in his seventh season as head coach at RMC.
