Mustangs trample hockey Redmen

Box Score

LONDON, Ont.  - Eight different players scored for Western as the Mustangs humbled visiting McGill 8-4 in men's university hockey before 391 at Thompson Arena, Friday.

The result snapped McGill's five-game win streak in league play and also ended Western's personal six-game losing skid to the Redmen, who had dominated the Mustangs over the past few years, including a 6-2 preseason victory in London this season.

It appeared like history was going to repeat itself when Justin Ducharme gave the Redmen a 1-0 lead only 99 seconds after the opening faceoff. But it was to be their last lead of the game as the Mustangs kicked into overdrive, leading 3-2 after the opening period on goals by Steve Gaskin, David Corrente and Zach Harnden. Rookie David Rose replied for the Redmen with his first official marker in OUA play.

However, Western turned it up a few notches in the middle period, exploding for five goals and led by an insurmountable 8-3 advantage after two.

Freshman Mathieu Pompei scored for McGill to make it 5-2 but Western replied with three unanswered markers before the second intermission. Scoring for the Mustangs was Brandon Greenside, Matt Clarke, Kyle DeCoste, Matt Marantz and Dan Erlich.

McGill senior Christophe Longpre-Poirier tallied the lone marker of the final stanza, netting his team-leading sixth of the campaign.

"We've had a lot of success against Western in my three seasons as coach and always seemed to get the bounces to go our way," said McGill bench boss Kelly Nobes, who had guided McGill to five consecutive road wins over Western during his tenure, including four victories in London and one in the CIS gold medal game Fredericton last spring. "Tonight we didn't play well, didn't get the bounces and they did. We had an off night and they didn't. I expect a much better performance from our team (on Saturday) against UOIT."

The Mustangs were whistled for 26 of the 40 penalty minutes called in the game but went 3-for-4 on the power-play against a Redmen team that entered the game with the best penalty-killing success rate in the 19-team league. McGill answered on one of five PP chances.

Despite the lopsided score, Western only had a 34-31 edge in shots. Hubert Morin started in nets for McGill but was pulled for the third time this season, after surrendering three goals before the 12 minute mark. His replacement Andrew Flemming didn't fare much better. He allowed four goals on the next 10 shots, took the loss and was yanked midway through the middle frame, in favour of Morin, who finished the game, allowed one more goal and ended up with 16 saves on 20 shots.

McGill, which dropped to 5-4 in OUA action, will play the Razorbacks (5-3-1) from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. The game is slated to be webcast online at: http://uoitridgebacks.com/fanzone/cast-live.html

Western (6-3) hosts Ottawa (4-1-4) on Saturday night.

REDMEN RAP: McGill is now 17-14-3 lifetime against the Mustangs... Coach Nobes was sick at home on Thursday and missed the team bus out of Montreal that night due to a virus than ran through his entire household but he felt better on Friday and caught a train, arriving in time to rejoin the team in Oshawa, en route to London.
