MONTREAL -- Rookie forward Patrick Delisle-Houde of Quebec City scored twice, added an assist and broke a 22-year-old school record as McGill skated to a 5-2 decision over the visiting Waterloo Warriors in men's university hockey before a capacity crowd of 964 at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was the fifth straight victory for the Redmen, who improved their lifetime mark against Waterloo to 11-16-3 since the two teams first crossed paths in 1964.
McGill, which had a lopsided 37-22 edge in shots, led 3-0 after the first period and a 3-1 margin after two.
Delisle-Houde, a physical education freshman, scored only 16 seconds into the game, beating the old McGill mark of 20 seconds set for the fastest goal by Martin Olivier, also against Waterloo, on Nov. 10, 1990.
The Redmen took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes later, when rookie Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., scored his first career CIS regular season marker.
Delisle-Houde then set up linemate Marc-Olivier Vachon of Thetford Mines, Que., for what proved to be the game-winner, on the power-play, at 17:54, which made it 3-0 for the Redmen. Vachon finished the soiree with three points as well.
"We played an early morning game on Friday (against York) while Waterloo had to play a tough overtime game at Trois-Rivières that night so we had an extra half-day of rest and wanted to take advantage of that by getting off to a strong start," said McGill head coach Kelly Nobes. "We scored on our first shift and really came at them hard, getting another quick goal. Obviously, we were pleased with our effort in the first period."
The Warriors bounced back with one in the second period (Colin Behenna) and another midway through the third (Steve Whitely) to make for a nail-biting finish.
Just when thoughts of a possible overtime loomed, Vachon set up Chris Longpré-Poirier of Longueuil, Que., for his team-leading fifth of the season at 18:24 of the final stanza to give the Redmen a 4-2 cushion. Only 29 seconds later, Delisle-Houde iced the contest with an extra insurance marker.
"Pat has been real steady for us, right from the beginning and does a lot of little things and goes to the areas that he needs to go to in order to score goals," said Nobes. "He got his first one off a rebound tonight and his second was on a nice back-handed shot. Good for him, he's playing well."
McGill goalie Hubert Morin of St. Georges de Beauce, Que., made 20 saves and improved his record to 3-1, while Waterloo's Keaton Hartigan, a fifth-year senior from Kitchener, Ont., was beaten five times on 37 shots for the loss.
The game featured 15 power-plays as referee Alex Cote seemed to be singing that "whistle while you work" theme made famous by the Disney classic "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".
McGill was 1-for-8 with the man-advantage, while Waterloo was 1-for-7. The Warriors PP goal, in the third period, snapped a Redmen streak of 34 consecutive kills. McGill, which was ranked 17th out of 19 OUA teams in penalty-killing just two weeks ago, has now jumped all the way to No.2 in the league after killing off 34 of their last 35 shorthanded situations over the last six games
McGill has now improved to 5-3-0 after a lethargic 0-3 start to the season. they head to south-western Ontario next week to play the Western Mustangs (4-3-0) in London and UOIT (4-2-1) in Oshawa, Nov. 9-10.
Waterloo (5-3-0) will host Ottawa (4-1-2) and Carleton (4-3-1), Nov. 9-10, respectively.
