MONTREAL -- McGill netminder Andrew Flemming of Quispamsis, N.B., kicked aside 30 shots in a 2-0 shutout over the York Lions in a rare morning OUA men's university hockey contest before an announced crowd of 798 at McConnell Arena, Friday.
The Redmen improved to 4-3-0 after posting their fourth-consecutive win in front of nearly 800 students from the English Montreal School Board in attendance as part of the team's annual "Score for School" event. Flemming, a first-year transfer student from RMC, recorded his first-career shutout in 71 regular season games while helping the Redmen snuff out all 10 York power plays in the outing.
"I think the guys just played really great today. I know it's cliché but the guys are so talented and when we're working hard we get results," explained Flemming, a master's student in kinesioogy, whose save percentage is now a sparkling .912 following his performance on Friday morning. "I don't know how many shots we gave up, but I thought we were pretty solid. There weren't a ton of really high-quality shots. We're building on our process and we're getting better and better and good things are starting to happen. We're on a roll now so we just have to build on that and keep it going."
Christophe Longpré-Poirier of Longueuil, Que. scored the eventual winning goal at 6:04 of the second period, tying him for the league-lead with three game-winners this season. Team co-captain Marc-André Daneau of Daveluyville, Que., slipped the insurance marker into an empty net at 19:06 of the third period.
Going a perfect 10-for-10 on the penalty kill, the Redmen now own an 88.6 per cent PK efficiency this season, good enough for fourth in the 19-team OUA. Despite having to change their routine to accommodate the 10:30 a.m. puck drop, third-year head coach Kelly Nobes wasn't surprised to see his team rise to the challenge.
"I thought we had a pretty good game this morning in terms of our energy," said Nobes, who now owns a 74-21-2 record behind the McGill bench. "We had one of these (morning games) last year and then when we got to the national championship, we actually had a game at 11:30 in the morning. It was really good that we had that because it's such a weird time for guys to get their motors going.
"Certainly our penalty-kill was really strong," he added. "I didn't think we were that sharp around their net. We left a few that we probably should have finished off and maybe taken them out of it a little bit earlier but all in all, we were pleased with our performance."
York goaltender Andrew Perugini of King City, Ont., stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced in a losing cause. Both teams return to action on Saturday, with the Lions travelling to Ottawa (4-2-0) to face the Gee-Gees while the Redmen will host Waterloo (4-2-0) at McConnell Arena at 7 p.m.
REDMEN RAP: McGill improved to 19-10-6 in 35 lifetime meeting against York... Former Habs left-winger and ex-Redmen captain Mathieu Darche was on hand to perform the ceremonial faceoff.
