Martlet Hockey vs. Montreal (Home)
Won 8-3 vs Montreal
MONTREAL - Chelsea Saunders of Ottawa scored a natural hat-trick and added a pair of assists as the No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team skated to a convincing 8-3 victory over No.4-Montreal at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill, which extended their win streak to 11 straight games against all CIS opponents, improved their lifetime record to 23-1 against the Carabins. The Martlets held a 35-32 edge in shots, including a 19-6 onslaught in the second period, when they tallied five times to take a 7-2 lead.
Linemates Leslie Oles and Mélodie Daoust also had five points apiece. Oles, a third-year physical education junior from Beaconsfield, Que., tallied twice and added three helpers. Daoust, a sophomore from Valleyfield, scored once and assisted on four others.
It was the first career three-goal game for Saunders, a 21-year-old kinesiology senior who hadn't found the net yet this season but broke open a 2-1 game by registered all of her markers in a six-minute span early in the middle period, including the game-winner. She now has 12 points in nine contests, matching her career regular season total over her first three campaigns with the Martlets.
"Chelsea's playing with a lot of confidence right now, getting pucks on the net and they're going in. All her hard work in practice is paying dividends," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, who moved Saunders to the top-scoring line a week ago, a move which has paid off handsomely, with 10 points in three games. "It's good to move players around on different lines sometimes, otherwise they can get a little complacent and develop bad habits. It also helps down the road in case we have injuries to deal with."
Also scoring for the Martlets was team captain Darragh Hamilton of Ormstown, Que., and Bianca Della Porta, a sophomore from Dorval, Que., in her first year with team.
Replying for the Carabins was Kim Deschenes, a senior from Saint Quentin, N.B., who had two goals, andDemmy Charlebois, a rookie from Longueuil, Que.
McGill went 1-for-3 on the power-play but were neutralized on a five-minute advantage when Laurence Beaulieu was ejected late in the second period after receiving a major penalty for checking from behind. The Carabins converted one of two PP chances.
Senior goaltender Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., turned aside 29 of 32 shots in the McGill net and improved to 7-0 this year and an unblemished 20-0 lifetime record in regular season play.
Elodie Rousseau-Sirois of Phohénégamook, Que., started between the pipes for the Carabins but was yanked midway through the middle stanza after surrendering five goals on 20 shots. She took the loss and fell to 4-2 in six starts. Sarah Mailloux, her freshman understudy from La Sarre, Que., played the reminder of the contest and was beaten three times on 12 shots.
The Carabins (6-2) will host Concordia (2-7-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m., while McGill (9-0) is off until on Nov. 24 when they will play Carleton (3-3-1) in the nation's capital.
