TROIS-RIVIERES - The No.5-ranked UQTR Patriotes took advantage of a lackluster opening period by McGill en route to a 3-1 victory in OUA men's hockey at Claude Mongrain Arena, Friday.
It was the second win in as many meetings for the first-place Patriotes (8-3-1) over McGill (6-5-0) and gave UQTR a five-point lead in the OUA East standings.
UQTR ended up 2-for-5 on the power-play and held the Redmen scoreless in five manpower advantages. The Pats had a 31-23 advantage in shots, including a lopsided 15-2 margin in the first period, when they took a 2-0 lead on goals by defenceman Raphael Boudreau at 9:05 and Tommy Tremblay, whose power-play marker at 18:11 proved to be the game-winner.
Antoine Quevillon added another power-play goal midway through the second stanza to all but put the game out of reach. McGill co-captain Marc-Andre Daneau of Daveluyville, Que., ruined Marc-Antoine Gelinas's bid for shutout at 11:09 of the final period. He was set up by centre Guillaume Langelier-Parentand blueliner Vincent Bourgeois.
The Redmen had an 11-6 margin in shots and hit a couple of goal posts in the final frame.
Gelinas, a freshman from St. Etienne de Lauzon, Que., made 22 saves for the victory, improving to 6-3-0. McGill netminder Andrew Flemming of Quispamsis, N.B., started for the second straight game and fifth time in 11 contests this season. The first-year transfer from RMC registered 28 saves in a losing cause and dropped to 3-4-0.
McGill, which went 1-2 on their road trip, now returns to the friendly confines of McConnell Arena, where they have posted a stellar 51-9-1 regular season record over the last five seasons. The Redmen will host the U of T Varsity Blues and Nipissing Lakers, Nov. 23-24, respectively. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. starts.
REDMEN RAP: McGill dropped is 69-146-17 lifetime against the Patriotes but are 31-19-3 in the last 53 meetings... Sophomore centre Marc-Olivier Vachon was held off the scoresheet but continues to lead the Redmen in scoring with a 3-7-10 record in 11 games... Chris Longpré-Poirier, who leads the team in goals, is second in points with 6-3-9 in 10 contests... Sophomore rearguard Hugo Laporte missed his sixth straight game since taking a shot to the head from Queen's forward Brendon MacDonald on Oct. 24. MacDonald was assessed a three-game suspension for his match penalty.
