ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Freshman Christian McCue of Hampden, Maine scored a career-high 23 points, leading McGill to an 81-68 come-from-behind win over the Queen's Gaels on Day 1 of the Brock Classic men's basketball tournament, Friday. The 6-foot-2 guard made seven three-pointers, six in the second half, as McGill rallied from an eight-point deficit.
McGill, which improved to 6-2 overall and 5-0 versus CIS teams, had two other players in double figures as Montrealer Adrian Hynes-Guery scored 19, and Nathan Joyal of St. Lazare, Que., came off the bench to score 14, including four three-pointers. Vincent Dufort led the team in rebounds with five, to go along with a pair of baskets.
Greg Faulkner of Kingston, Ont., led the Gaels with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Roshane Roberts of Vaughan, Ont., came off the bench to score 15. Toronto native Sukhpreet Singh had nine points and seven rebounds for Queen's.
Queen's out-rebounded McGill 44-30, including an impressive 28-13 edge in the first half, which had them ahead 35-31 going into the intermission.
"They're a very good team offensively and we had to make adjustments by running a zone defence to break up their runs," said Dave DeAveiro, head coach of the Redmen. "The biggest thing for us was to come out strong in the third quarter after getting killed on the glass in the first half. We outscored them (50-33) and out-rebounded (17-16) them in the second half."
The Gaels got off to a quick start with a pair of Roberts three-pointers sandwiching a 9-4 run that put Queen's up 16-8 with 3:50 left in the first quarter, and they led 18-16 at the end of the period. McGill came back to take a brief 26-25 lead but Roberts, Singh and Faulkner combined on a 9-3 run to put Queen's back up 35-29. A pair of late free-throws cut the Gaels margin to four points at halftime.
The Gaels took a 47-40 lead midway through the third quarter, but McGill rallied with a trio of long bombs, part of a 14-3 run that put the Redmen ahead for good. The Redmen led 57-51 after the third quarter and steadily pulled away in the fourth.
McGill shot 44.4 per cent from the field, while holding the Gaels to 32.2. The Redmen shot a stellar 52 per cent from the three-point line (13-for-25), while the Gaels connected on 33.3 (11-for-33).
With the loss, the Gaels fell to 5-5 overall, including a 3-3 mark against CIS opponents.
This was the second meeting of the year between the two squads, both of them victories for McGill. The Gaels and Redmen return to action on Day 2 of the Brock Classic. Queen's will play Regina in the early game, at 2 p.m., while McGill will face Brock at 4 p.m.
