NEPEAN, Ont. - Casey Auerbach, a fifth-year infielder from Westmount, Que., reached base five times, batting 4-for-4, with a double, three runs batted in and four runs scored as the McGill Redmen crushed Carleton 14-3 in the opening game of the Canadian Interuniversity Baseball Association national championship, a six-team tournament at Hamilton Yards Park, Thursday.
It was the sixth straight victory for McGill, which outhit the Ravens 16-4, took a 4-2 lead into the third inning, and then exploded for six runs to put the game out of reach.
Redmen starting pitcher Simon Ehrmantraut, a history sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., scattered two hits over six solid innings of work for the victory. He allowed three earned runs. Reliever Daniel Kost-Stephenson, also from Westmount, mopped up in the final inning, giving up one run on a pair of hits.
"It was certainly a good start to the tournament for us," said Jason Starr, in his first year as head coach and field manager of the Redmen. "All nine guys in the batting order took quality at bats and we got big hits from Casey, Tyler Welence and Joel Ross. Pitching wise, I couldn't have asked for anything more. 'Trout' gave us six strong innings and we only had to use two pitchers, which is critical in such a format (where the winning team will play five games in four days)."
Welence, an engineering freshman from Ridgewood, N.J., went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Ross, a materials engineering senior from Rothesay, N.B., was 3-for-5 with three RBIs from the sixth spot in the batting order.
"The guys are happy about the win, but understand there is a lot of baseball to be played, and we are still trying to get better every single game," added Starr.
McGill, which finished with a 9-7 record during the regular season after a 1-4 start, plays Durham College (9-7) from Oshawa, Ont., on Friday at 10 a.m. and closes out pool play Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Parc Sanscartier in Gatineau, Que., when they take on Crandall University (9-3) from Moncton. The semifinal and final round is slated for Sunday.
