MONTREAL - Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland, Que.,
scored once and set up the game-winner as top-ranked McGill blanked
Concordia 3-0 in women's university hockey, Saturday, extending
their win streak to 72 consecutive games.
It was also McGill's 31st straight win over the Stingers, who
haven't scored against the Martlets in more than five regular
season games, dating back to a 16-1 McGill win on Nov. 15,
2007.
After a scoreless first period, senior Rebecca
Martindale of Kingston, Ont., netted what proved to be the
winning tally on the power-play, only 51 seconds into the middle
stanza.
Less than four minutes later, rookie Kim Ton-That of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., made it 2-0,
converting a pass from Lainie Smith.
Davidson's third-period marker at 4:26 all but snuffed out any
chance for a Concordia comeback. The fifth-year team captain
improved her grasp on the Quebec league scoring title with 9-15-24
in 12 contests, seven points ahead of Kim Deschene
from the Montreal Carabins.
McGill outshot the Stingers 48-13, including a 17-4 advantage in
the middle period. Freshman goalie Andrea Weckman
of Kitchener, Ont., earned her first regular-season shutout and
improved to 2-0-0. Audrey Doyon-Lessard of Charny,
Que., made 45 saves in a losing cause and fell to 1-6-0.
The Martlets went 1-for 2 on the power-play and improved their
PP efficiency to 29.3 percent on the season. Concordia, who have
yet to score a PPG in their 10 games, went 0-for-1.
McGill sits atop the QSSF with a 12-0 record and will play at
Ottawa on Jan. 17. Concordia (1-6-3) will host Carleton on Jan.
16.
