MONTREAL - Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles,
Que., scored a hat-trick as No.1-ranked skated to a 5-1 victory at
the University of Montreal in women's hockey, Friday.
It improved McGill's lifetime record to 3-0 against the
eighth-ranked Carabins and more importantly, extended their win
streak to 65 consecutive games against Canadian university
opponents, two shy of the CIS record set by Alberta in 2005. The
Martlets are 31-0 against teams ranked in the Top 10 during their
run for the record.
McGill had a large territorial advantage over Montreal, with a
47-19 margin in shots, including a lopsided 18-4 edge in the final
frame.
Fabienne Marcotte of Bécancour, Que., broke
open a scoreless tie at 1:52 of the middle period for the Carabins
but McGill rallied with five unanswered goals.
Rearguard Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue,
Que., opened the floodgates for the Martlets at 10:04 of the period
with her fourth marker of the campaign.
Bettez put McGill ahead only 107 seconds later with an
even-strength goal that proved to be the game-winner. She later
added a shorthanded marker at 19:23 of the second to make it 4-1
and capped the rally with a power-play goal at 19:22 of the
third.
Rebecca Martindale of Kingston, Ont., also
connected on the power-play with her sixth of the season for the
Red & White, who went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage. Montreal
went 0-for-6 on the power-play and gave up the aforementioned
SHG.
McGill captain Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland,
Que., picked up three assists and now leads the Quebec conference
scoring race with 6-10-16 in eight games. A fifth-year senior who
is McGill's all-time leading scorer, she sits two points ahead of
Bettez (9-5-14).
Rookie netminder Taylor Salisbury of Surrey,
B.C., kicked aside 18 of 19 shots for the win and improved to 4-0.
Catherine Herron, a former McGill goalie from
Chambly, Que., made 47 saves in a losing cause for the Carabins.
Her record fell to 5-3.
McGill (8-0) plays at Carleton (3-4) Saturday at 6 p.m. The
Carabins fell to 7-2 and will host Carleton on Sunday.
