MONTREAL - In a game that featured everything but the kitchen
sink, senior striker Eugene Graske, a native of
Germany, scored with 15 minutes remaining as McGill salvaged 2-2
draw with visiting Laval in men's soccer action at Molson Stadium,
Friday.
Veteran Gareth Pugh of Ottawa, had given McGill
a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute of play but the Rouge et Or rallied
with a pair of goals from the foot of David
Chapdelaine-Miller. The senior from Drummondville, Que.,
evened the score in the 54th minute and was credited with the
go-ahead marker in the 78th minute after McGill junior Graeme
Tingey accidently scored an own goal on Redmen 'keeper
Jean-Lou Gosselin.
The two teams combined for 16 fouls and five yellow warning
cards four to the Redmen.
Laval was forced into using three different goaltenders. Vincent
Cournoyer, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound sophomore, started and kicked out
one of two shots faced until being knocked out of the game with an
undisclosed injury in the 37th minute. He was replaced between the
pipes by reserve 'keeper Benoit Lepage until
halftime. After intermission, the Rouge et Or trotted out a second
replacement in Pascale Braggagnolo, a 5-foot-11
defender from Quebec City.
The game featured six offside plays, all by the Redmen as they
attempted to take advantage of the revolving door in the Laval net.
Despite the zany scenario in the Laval net, Redmen 'keeper
Jean-Lou Gosselin of Greenfield Park, Que., was
called upon to make five saves and was picked by Laval coach
Samir Ghrib as McGill's player of the game..
The result left McGill with a 2-1-3 record, one point behind
Laval (3-2-1), which holds down third-place in the seven-team
Quebec University Soccer League. The Montréal Carabins (4-1-1)
continue to lead the standings, with UQAM (3-0-3) maintaining the
hold on second place, two points ahead of Laval.
The Redmen have a day off to regroup before heading to Quebec
City for a return engagement on Sunday.
