MONTREAL -- Max Leblond, a native of Lille, France, and Brianna Miller of Pointe Claire, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Oct. 20, 2013.
Leblond, a 5-foot-10, 178-pound goalkeeper with the men’s soccer team, saved all nine shots faced en route to posting back-to-back shutouts last weekend, turning McGill’s precarious playoff hopes into a probable berth. A 22-year-old majoring in North American studies, he was credited with five saves in a 0-0 tie against visiting UQAM last Thursday, then followed that with a four-save whitewash in a crucial 4-0 victory at UQTR, Sunday. That result move the Redmen from fifth-place, past the Patriotes into the fourth and final playoff position, with two games remaining. Leblond is in his second year with the Redmen after transferring from the NCAA’s Cardinal Stritch University.
Miller, a 5-foot-6 back with the women’s rugby team scored 17 points in a 27-17 sudden-death RSEQ semifinal victory over visiting Ottawa last Saturday. The 21-year-old physical education senior scored one try, converted three others and added a pair of penalty kicks. A speedy, 5 foot-6 fullback, she led the league in scoring for the third consecutive year with 98 points in seven games. She joined the Martlets in 2010 after graduating from John Abbott College.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
