MONTREAL –
Loïc Courville-Fortin of Repentigny, Que., and
Naomie Lo from Toronto, are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending March 9, 2025.
Courville-Fortin, a 20-year-old biochemistry freshman on the men's swim team, broke eight records and won two medals to earn second-team All-Canadian honours, as the McGill Redbirds finished fourth of 25 teams at the U SPORTS national championship meet in Toronto last week. The 6-foot-1 sprinter established McGill and RSEQ records in the morning prelims of the 200-metre backstroke (1:54.47), surpassing the 1:57.04 benchmark held since 2019. Courville-Fortin then won bronze in that event during the evening finals (1:55.49). He also broke McGill and RSEQ records in the silver-medal winning 200 individual medley (1:57.57), surpassing his own mark of 1:59.33. He then was part of school and RSEQ records in 4x100 medley relay that touched the wall in 3:35.00, erasing the previous best of 3:35.09 set in 2022. And finally, his leadoff leg in the 100 backstroke of that relay, was clocked in 52.88, which erased the McGill and RSEQ mark (52.18) set in 2019. And he just missed another podium with a fourth-place finish in the 50m backstroke.
Lo, a 22-year-old software engineering senior with the women's swim team, won a pair of silver medals and broke a school record medals to earn second-team All-Canadian honours as the McGill Martlets finished second of 20 teams, their best standing ever, at the same U SPORTS national championship. She rewrote her own school record in the 200-metre butterfly, which won silver in 2:14.01, breaking her previous mark of 2:14.51. Lo also swam the leadoff leg on the 4x200 freestyle relay that placed second in 8:07.88. That destroyed the school record of 8:12.00 set in 2022.
