MONTREAL –
Maxime Blanchard of Fonthill, Ont., and
Taylor Garcia of Ottawa, are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending March 2, 2025.
Blanchard, a 23-year-old management junior on the men's hockey team, scored three points in as many games during the OUA East semifinal series with Concordia last week. The 5-foot-11, 184-pound defenceman had a pair of assists in Game 1, a 6-1 upset victory at Concordia and added a helper in game 2, a 5-1 loss at Place Bell. He was recruited to McGill in 2022 from Sherbrooke of the QMJHL. He currently has two other siblings playing varsity hockey at McGill, including younger brother
Maxime Blanchard is a rearguard and teammate with the Redbirds, while younger sister
Cassidy Blanchard patrols the blue line for the Martlets hockey team.
Garcia, a 19-year-old Arts and Science sophomore with the women's hockey team, scored 50 per cent of McGill's two goals in a semifinal series against top-seeded Concordia last week. The 5-foot-4 forward tallied once and it was a highlight reel goal as she picked up the puck behind her net and skated from end-to-end before burying a power-play marker in the Concordia net. A product of Mother Teresa high school in the nation's capital, she played junior hockey for the Ottawa Lady Senators before enrolling at McGill in 2023.
